Malaria (P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale)

2010
In Australia, all four human Plasmodium species are routinely detected, with cases typically arising in migrants, travellers, soldiers, and refugees [2]. Traditionally, light microscopy has been utilized in Plasmodium species detection; however, the last decade has seen the introduction of nucleic acid amplification-based diagnostic assays [5 ...

Identification of the optimal third generation antifolate against P. falciparum and P. vivax

Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology, 2005
Inhibitors of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) have been mainstays in the treatment of falciparum malaria. Resistance to one of these antifolates, pyrimethamine, is now common in Plasmodium falciparum populations. Antifolates have not traditionally been recommended for treatment of vivax malaria.

Detection of P. falciparum and P. vivax gametocytes in field surveys

2013
Background: Measurements of the prevalence of Plasmodium sp. gametocytes may serve as a tool to monitor the success of antimalarial interventions, in particular in the context of renewed efforts to eliminate malaria. We developed tools for detection and quantification of P. vivax and P. falciparum gametocytes[for full text, please go to the a.m. URL]

Therapeutic responses ofPlasmodium vivaxandP. falciparumto chloroquine, in an area of western India whereP. vivaxpredominates

Annals of Tropical Medicine & Parasitology, 2008
In 2003-2005, following an increase in the local incidence of human malaria, the therapeutic efficacy of chloroquine (CQ) in the treatment of Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum malaria was evaluated in the Anand district of Gujarat state, in western India.

Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia associated with P. vivax malaria

Tropical Doctor, 2018
Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia due to malaria or following its treatment with artesunate is rare. A child presented with severe anaemia after being treated with artesunate for P. vivax malaria. Blood transfusion was difficult as cross-matching showed major incompatibility; group O negative blood under the cover of steroids was transfused.

Concurrent dengue and malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax

Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2007
Concurrent infections of dengue and malaria are rare. We report a case of dengue fever with acute malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax in which the presence of mixed infection with P. vivax was overlooked and confirmed later on during recurrence of the fever that had initially responded to conventional antimalarial treatment and ...

Comparison of a chromosomal segment of P. vivax with that of P. falciparum

P. falciparum and P. vivax are two human malaria pathogens. Although these parasites share the same hosts, they are evolutionary distant species, differing in genome composition and organisation, parasite life cycle and clinical manifestations. Genome comparison of these two species is fundamental to increase our understanding of common biological ...

P. vivax Malaria presenting as Thrombotic Microangiopathy.

The Journal of the Association of Physicians of India, 2018
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is reported to occur in patients with falciparum malaria but not uncommon with vivax malaria. AKI, anemia, thrombocytopenia and jaundice is a recurrent finding in severe malaria and can mimic as thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA).

Origin and evolution of human malaria parasite, P. falciparum and P. vivax

2010
The global occurrences of malaria make it the major killer among all diseases. Many initiatives are being taken worldwide to control the disease. But, despite all these initiatives, its incidences are increasing constantly. Antimalarial drug resistance and lack of method to assess efficacy of any control initiatives have also worsen the situation.
