Homology Modeling of P2X Receptors
2019Since the X-ray structure of the zebra fish P2X4 receptor in the closed state was published in 2009 homology modeling has been used to generate structural models for P2X receptors. In this chapter, we outline how to use the MODELLER software to generate such structural models for P2X receptors whose structures have not been solved yet.

Purinoceptors: Are there families of P2X and P2Y purinoceptors?
Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 1994There has been an exponential growth in interest in purinoceptors since the potent effects of purines were first reported in 1929 and purinoceptors defined in 1978. A distinction between P1 (adenosine) and P2 (ATP/ADP) purinoceptors was recognized at that time and later, A1 and A2, as well as P2x and P2y subclasses of P1 and P2 purinoceptors were also ...

Fountain et al . report the identification and characterization of an ATP receptor in Dictyostelium discoideum that is homologous to vertebrate P2X receptors. When heterologously expressed in the human embryonic kidney (HEK) cell line, the protein was localized to the plasma membrane, was ...

Abstract Six P2X receptor subunits are currently known, encoded on different genes. The proteins deduced from their cDNAs have 379 to 472 amino acids; they are 36–48% identical. They are thought to have two transmembrane segments, with most of the protein forming a large extracellular loop. In-situ hybridization shows a widespread tissue distribution

P2X Receptors in Health and Disease
2011Seven P2X receptor subunits have been cloned which form functional homo- and heterotrimers. These are cation-selective channels, equally permeable to Na(+) and K(+) and with significant Ca(2+) permeability. The three-dimensional structure of the P2X receptor is described.

Abstract P2X receptors are ATP-gated ion channels that are ubiquitously expressed in eukaryotic tissues. They are involved in diverse physiological processes, from modulation of synaptic transmission, to inflammation, sensing of taste, bladder filling, and pain.
