Background and Purpose The functional organization of corneal cold nerve endings, critical structures in maintaining the ocular surface, remains poorly understood. Here, the photoisomerizable small‐molecule diethylamine‐azobenzene‐quaternary ammonium (DENAQ) was used to photomodulate activity of cold‐sensing nerve terminals in control and chronic tear ...

Antidepressants inhibit P2X4 receptor function: a possible involvement in neuropathic pain relief
Background Neuropathic pain is characterized by pain hypersensitivity to innocuous stimuli (tactile allodynia) that is nearly always resistant to known treatments such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or even opioids.

Astrocyte Regulation of Spinal Circuit Function
Spinal cord astrocytes exist as an additional component of the computational framework that governs both sensory perceptions and motor outputs (left). By integrating local synaptic activity together with signals that reflect whole‐body state (e.g., neuromodulators, immune signals, and vascular signals) into defined input states (Sn), astrocytes adapt ...

Background The cerebral microvascular occlusion elicits microvascular injury which mimics the different degrees of stroke severity observed in patients, but the mechanisms underlying these embolic injuries are far from understood.

Stromal Cell‐Mast Cell Communication Orchestrates Anti‐Viral Immunity in the Meninges
This study delineates the spatial distribution and postnatal maturation of meningeal mast cells and uncovers their essential role in antiviral immunity. Using genetic models, mast cells are shown to promote CD8⁺ T cell infiltration and viral clearance via IL‐33 receptor signaling and synergistic activation by IL‐33 and ATP from infected stromal cells ...

A P2X receptor-mediated nociceptive afferent pathway to lamina I of the spinal cord
Of the six lamina regions in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, lamina I is a major sensory region involved in nociceptive transmission under both physiological and pathological conditions.

Chronic stress is linked to many human psychiatric disorders involving the prefrontal cortex (PFC). We performed a meta‐analysis of public transcriptional profiling data that showed that chronically stressed mice have less gene expression for glia and neural activity in the PFC. These findings mirror patterns seen in psychiatric patients.

Plasticity at excitatory synapses can be induced either by synaptic release of glutamate or the release of gliotransmitters such as ATP. Recently, we showed that postsynaptic P2X2 receptors activated by ATP released from astrocytes downregulate synaptic ...

Background and Purpose Neuroinflammation is increasingly recognised to contribute to drug‐resistant epilepsy. Activation of ATP‐gated P2X7 receptors has emerged as an important upstream mechanism, and increased P2X7 receptor expression is present in the seizure focus in rodent models and patients. Pharmacological antagonists of P2X7 receptors attenuate
