Smoking has been clearly established as a major risk factor affecting the carcinogenesis of pancreatic carcinoma. Diet has also been associated with pancreatic cancer, although no conclusive data are yet available.

Chronic pancreatitis is frequently observed in men drinking approximately 2 g·kg<sup>-1</sup>day<sup>-1</sup> during a mean of 17 years. The diet of these patients is abnormally rich in fat and protein. Giving alcohol and a similar diet to dogs and rats, it has been possible to reproduce chronic alcoholic pancreatitis.

Severe acute pancreatitis with pancreatic necrosis usually precedes a pancreatic abscess. The clinical features are not always dramatic, but when malaise, fever and leucocytosis persist after an attack of severe acute pancreatitis, this complication should be suspected. Surgical drainage of the abscess provides the only hope of survival.
