Simultaneous Pancreas-Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Society of Nephrology, 2001
The discovery of insulin in 1922 changed the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) forever. Insulin was the first effective therapy for type 1 DM; however, its success engendered a terrible paradox for patients with this disease.

Tissue‐Stimulator Platform for Electrically Stimulating Pancreatic β‐Cells for Long‐Term Functional Regulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We present a tissue‐stimulator platform for seamless electrode integration with pancreatic tissue, applying uniform electrical stimulation through optimized design with biohybrid 3D printing. Advantageous effects of electrical stimulation on β‐cell function were observed, including enhanced calcium signaling, islet morphology, and maturation.

Assessing causal relationships between iron level, disorders of iron metabolism, and hepatocellular carcinoma: a Mendelian randomisation study

open access: yesDiscover Oncology
Background Emerging evidence indicates that elevated systemic iron levels and dysregulated iron metabolism are closely associated with the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

C-reactive protein (CRP) promotes malignant properties in pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms

open access: yesEndocrine Connections, 2019
Objective: Elevated pre-operative C-reactive protein (CRP) serum values have been reported to be associated with poor overall survival for patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (pNEN).

Bioengineered 3D hPSC‐Cholangiocyte Ducts With Physiological Signals for Biliary Disease Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Tian and colleagues generated a bioengineered bile duct from human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)‐derived intrahepatic cholangiocytes within a high‐throughput, 384‐well platform to systematically examine the influence of biliary physiological signals including fluid flow, stromal cells and bile acids, and models intrahepatic biliary disease progression ...

Anti‐A Production by a Group 0 Spleen Transplanted to a Group A Recipient [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
. A group A1 diabetic received a pancreas‐spleen transplant from a group 0 donor. Severe immune hemolysis due to anti‐A ensued, requiring graft splenectomy. The transplanted spleen can be a potent source of blood group antibody. © 1985 S.

A Versatile, Portable Intravital Microscopy Platform for Studying Beta-cell Biology In Vivo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The pancreatic islet is a complex micro-organ containing numerous cell types, including endocrine, immune, and endothelial cells. The communication of these systems is lost upon isolation of the islets, and therefore the pathogenesis of diabetes can only

Pancreas Transplantation: Past, Present, Future.

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medicine, 2016
Diabetes is the pandemic disease of the modern era, with 10% of these patients having type 1 diabetes mellitus. Despite the prevalence, morbidities, and associated financial burden, treatment options have not changed since the introduction of injectable ...
