A testis-expressing heme peroxidase HPX12 regulates male fertility in the mosquito Anopheles stephensi

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
In vertebrates dysregulation of the antioxidant defense system has a detrimental impact on male fertility and reproductive physiology. However, in insects, especially mosquitoes the importance of sperm quality has been poorly studied.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Salivary glands harbor more diverse microbial communities than gut in Anopheles culicifacies

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2014
Background In recent years, it has been well documented that gut flora not only influence mosquito physiology, but also significantly alter vector competency.

Comparison of the human-baited double net trap with the human landing catch for Aedes albopictus monitoring in Shanghai, China

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2018
Background Human landing catch (HLC) is the most efficient method for Aedes monitoring, but it is not ethical due to its high risk of human exposure to pathogens. We designed trials to assess the performance of an alternative human-baited double net trap

Host-Parasite Co-evolution and Optimal Mutation Rates for Semi-conservative Quasispecies

open access: yes, 2004
In this paper, we extend a model of host-parasite co-evolution to incorporate the semi-conservative nature of DNA replication for both the host and the parasite.

The effects of parasitism and body length on positioning within wild fish shoals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The influence of body length and parasitism on the positioning behaviour of individuals in wild fish shoals was investigated by a novel means of capturing entire shoals of the banded killifish (Fundulus diaphanus, Lesueur) using a grid-net that ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Plasmodium falciparum Rosette Formation Assay

open access: yesBio-Protocol, 2013
Rosetting, i.e. the capacity of red blood cells (iRBCs) infected with mature parasite stages to bind two or more uninfected red blood cells (RBCs) is a virulence factor of Plasmodium falciparum.
