Coverage of midline posterior wounds presents a challenge to the reconstructive surgeon, especially when spinal stabilization hardware has been present and exposed in the wound. Most commonly those wounds that involve the mid to upper thoracic spine have been covered by latissimus dorsi muscle or musculocutaneous flaps. Lower midline wounds, especially

Paraspinal muscle reflex dynamics
Journal of Biomechanics, 2004Neuromuscular control of spinal stability may be represented as a control system wherein the paraspinal muscle reflex acts as feedback response to kinetic and kinematic disturbances of the trunk. The influence of preparatory muscle recruitment for the control of spinal stability has been previously examined, but there are few reported studies that ...

Selective paraspinal muscle amyotrophy
Journal of the Neurological Sciences, 2000A 56-year-old female presented with mild low back pain. Examination revealed severe, selective atrophy of the thoracic and lumbar paraspinal muscles. Fibrillations were seen in the paraspinal muscles on EMG. Limb EMG was normal. Biopsy of the gluteus maximus was normal. Paraspinal muscle biopsy revealed neurogenic features.
