Isolation and identification of culturable bacteria from wild Anopheles culicifacies, a first step in a paratransgenesis approach

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2014
Background Due to the effect of midgut bacteria on proliferation of parasites and their potential as paratransgenesis tools, their identification in malaria vector mosquitoes is important. Anopheles culicifacies s.l. is one of the main malaria vectors in

Paratransgenesis: a promising new strategy for mosquito vector control

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2015
The three main mosquito genera, Anopheles, Aedes and Culex, transmit respectively malaria, dengue and lymphatic filariasis. Current mosquito control strategies have proved unsuccessful, and there still is a substantial number of morbidity and mortality ...

Aerobic Bacterial Community of American Cockroach Periplaneta americana,a Step toward Finding Suitable Paratransgenesis Candidates

open access: yesJournal of Arthropod-Borne Diseases, 2015
Background: Cockroaches mechanically spread pathogenic agents, however, little is known about their gut microbiota. Identification of midgut microbial community helps targeting novel biological control strategies such as paratransgenesis.

Bacterial Competition Influences the Ability of Symbiotic Bacteria to Colonize Western Flower Thrips

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Symbiont mediated RNAi (SMR) is a promising method for precision control of pest insect species such as Western Flower Thrips (WFT). Two species of bacteria are known to be dominant symbiotic bacteria in WFT, namely BFo1 and BFo2 (Bacteria from ...

Evaluation of two candidate molecules-TCTP and cecropin-on the establishment of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense into the gut of Glossina palpalis gambiensis. [PDF]

open access: yesInsect Sci
This study investigates the potential of enhancing the resistance of Glossina palpalis gambiensis to Trypanosoma brucei gambiense to mitigate the transmission of Human African Trypanosomiasis. We successfully cloned genes encoding proteins of interest in Sodalis strains, resulting in recombinant Sodalis (recSodalis) that were micro‐injected into the L3

Controlling Vector-borne Diseases Through Paratransgenesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
The high incidence of Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) and the inefficiency of current methods in preventing and treating them have been driving research for alternative solutions.

Novel Asaia bogorensis Signal Sequences for Plasmodium Inhibition in Anopheles stephensi

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
Mosquitoes vector many pathogens that cause human disease, such as malaria that is caused by parasites in the genus Plasmodium. Current strategies to control vector-transmitted diseases are hindered by mosquito and pathogen resistance, so research has ...

The Effect of Gut Bacteria on the Physiology of Red Palm Weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier and Their Potential for the Control of This Pest

open access: yesInsects, 2021
Red Palm Weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier, is a notorious pest, which infests palm trees and has caused great economic losses worldwide. At present, insecticide applications are still the main way to control this pest.

Self-limiting paratransgenesis.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2020
Presently, the principal tools to combat malaria are restricted to killing the parasite in infected people and killing the mosquito vector to thwart transmission.

Microbial degradation of plant toxins

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 25, Issue 12, Page 2988-3010, December 2023., 2023
Plants produce a variety of secondary metabolites. This review summarizes the knowledge on microbial degradation of those metabolites with a focus on the genes and enzymes involved in the biodegradation pathways. Knowledge gaps and possible biotechnological applications of plant metabolite degrading microorganisms are highlighted.
