Combined length scales in dissipative particle dynamics

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2005
When a particle model simulates fluid behavior, the calculation of all particle interactions causes long computation times. Especially in mesoscale simulations, the bulk areas can be computationally demanding. To reduce the time spent on such regions, we propose a model that combines different length scales in one system.

Lifetime and path length of the virtual particle

Physics of Atomic Nuclei, 2005
The concepts of the lifetime and path length of a virtual particle are introduced. It is shown that, near the mass surface of the real particle, these quantities constitute a 4-vector. At very high energies, the virtual particle can propagate over considerable (evenmacroscopic) distances.

Packing of Cylindrical Particles with a Length Distribution

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1997
The packing of cylindrical particles with log‐normal and modified power‐law length distributions has been experimentally studied. The results indicate that the packing density is heavily dependent on the parameters in the two distributions. However, this dependence cannot be predicted by the direct analogy to that for the packing of spherical particles.

Particle channeling length in crystals

Physics Letters A, 1990
Abstract An effective channeling length is introduced as a characteristic parameter for processes related with the channeling of particles in thick crystals. It is shown that the effective length is much larger than the dechanneling length.

Particle systems with variable length

Bulletin of the Brazilian Mathematical Society, 2002
The models studied in the theory of interacting particle systems are usually based on the assumptions that the space, usually \(\mathbb Z^d\) or \(\mathbb R^d\), does not change in the interaction of the evolution law. This assumption is not the only possible one. In this short paper (without proofs) another approach is presented in which the number of

Particle Swarm Optimization with Dynamic Step Length

2007
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a robust swarm intelligent technique inspired from birds flocking and fish schooling. Though many effective improvements have been proposed, however, the premature convergence is still its main problem. Because each particle's movement is a continuous process and can be modelled with differential equation groups, a ...

Controlling the magnetic filaments length by tuning the particle interactions

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2008
Initially stable samples of monodisperse superparamagnetic particles were aggregated in the presence of an external magnetic field and different amounts of electrolyte. The aggregation process was monitored using dynamic light scattering (DLS). When the magnetic field was turned off, a significant change of the effective diffusion coefficient was ...

Structural characterization of full-length NSF and 20S particles

Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, 2012
The 20S particle, which is composed of the N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor (NSF), soluble NSF attachment proteins (SNAPs) and the SNAP receptor (SNARE) complex, has an essential role in intracellular vesicle fusion events. Using single-particle cryo-EM and negative stain EM, we reconstructed four related three-dimensional structures: Chinese hamster ...

An Effective Smoothing Length Updating Method for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

International Journal of Computational Methods, 2022
Smoothing length plays a significant role in smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Inappropriate smoothing length will result in problems of stability, accuracy and efficiency. Updating smoothing length with time is very important for SPH modeling of large deformation problems.
