Revisiting fractionation in prostate carbon ion therapy: first comparative analysis of biologically effective dose using mMKM with diverse parameters

open access: yesRadiation Oncology
Background Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) for prostate cancer has evolved from conventional regimens [66 Gy(RBE)/20 fractions (66G20), 63 Gy(RBE)/20 fractions (63G20)] toward hypofractionated schedules [57.6 Gy(RBE)/16 fractions (57.6G16), 51.6 Gy(RBE ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Are All Particles Real? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In Bohmian mechanics elementary particles exist objectively, as point particles moving according to a law determined by a wavefunction. In this context, questions as to whether the particles of a certain species are real--questions such as, Do photons ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

The potential of integrating stereotactic ablative radiotherapy techniques with hyperfractionation for lung cancer

open access: yesThoracic Cancer
Background Limited literature exists on the feasibility and effectiveness of integrating stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) techniques with hyperfractionated regimens for patients with lung cancer.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Review of the Gas-Phase Synthesis of Particle Heteroaggregates and Their Applications

open access: yesKONA Powder and Particle Journal
Custom-made nanomaterials are indispensable in the production of high-value goods in almost any industry. For many applications, materials with defined functional contacts on the nanoscale between different components are crucial.

Cathodoluminescence and electron microscopy of red quantum dots used for display applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Cathodoluminescent imaging of the visible light emitted from quantum dots is reported. The shape and uniformity of individual particles is observed in the STEM electron image and the image of the particles created from their visible light collected ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
