Asymptotic stabilization of nonlinear systems using passivity indices

2016 American Control Conference (ACC), 2016
This work presents a new controller design technique for asymptotic stabilization of nonlinear systems using passivity indices. The aforementioned indices measure the level of passivity of a system and we address the question of how to use this information to design a dynamic output feedback controller that stabilizes the closed-loop at a given ...

Feedback control of nonlinear systems using passivity indices

2015 IEEE Conference on Control Applications (CCA), 2015
This paper presents a new controller design framework for nonlinear feedback systems using passivity indices. These indices measure the level of passivity of a system and can be used to set lower bounds to the parameters of a stabilizing controller.

Indicators of Active and Passive Coping in Myocardial Infarction Victims

Journal of Gerontology, 1992
This retrospective study attempted to explore life events, personality factors, subjective perceptions, and coping reactions in myocardial infarction (MI) patients. Seventy-seven MI survivors participated in the study. The PERI Life Events Scale, the 16 PF personality inventory, and a questionnaire covering self-ratings of subjective perception and ...

Cladocerans as indicators in the importance of passive nature conservation

Biologia, 2018
The aim of our study was to verify the effectiveness of passive nature conservation with regard to the preservation of species, by examining a typical mesozooplankton community. We investigated five oxbow lakes which were similar to each other in terms of size, depth and close-to-each, but which differed markedly from one to another in terms of lake ...

Passivity indices for symmetrically interconnected distributed systems

2011 19th Mediterranean Conference on Control & Automation (MED), 2011
In this paper, the passivity indices for both linear and nonlinear multi-agent systems with feedforward and feedback interconnections are derived. For linear systems, the passivity indices are explicitly characterized, while the passivity indices in the nonlinear case are characterized by a set of matrix inequalities.

A new application of passive samplers as indicators of in-situ biodegradation processes

Chemosphere, 2016
In this paper, a method for evaluating the in-situ degradation of nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAH) in sediments is presented. The methodology is adapted from the passive sampler technique, which commonly uses the dissipation rate of labeled compounds loaded in passive sampler devices to sense the environmental conditions of exposure ...

Stability and Variability: Indicators for Passive Stability and Active Control in a Rhythmic Task

Journal of Neurophysiology, 2008
Using a rhythmic task where human subjects bounced a ball with a handheld racket, fine-grained analyses of stability and variability extricated contributions from open-loop control, noise strength, and active error compensation. Based on stability analyses of a stochastic-deterministic model of the task—a surface contacting the ball by periodic ...

Passive level indicator and valve for transferring LN2

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1984
A gas thermometer operated diaphragm valve for controling LN2 transfers is described. The value uses the pressure variation of air or N2 between 77 K and ambient temperature to open and close the vent line of a self-pressuring storage Dewar.

Thinking about Indices and “Passive” versus Active Management

The Journal of Portfolio Management, 2010
Trillions of dollars are indexed to various benchmarks, which the authors refer to as paper indices. Paper indices are based on a surprisingly large number of arbitrary, active decisions that are made by the organizations that sponsor them. Fuller, Han, and Tung investigate the importance of these active decisions on benchmark returns by constructing ...
