Acute Infectious Gastroenteritis Potentiates a Crohn's Disease Pathobiont to Fuel Ongoing Inflammation in the Post-Infectious Period.

open access: yes, 2016
Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of diverse etiology. Exposure to foodborne pathogens causing acute gastroenteritis produces a long-term risk of CD well into the post-infectious period but the mechanistic basis for this ongoing ...

Associations Between Microbial Depletion and Autonomic Dysregulation in Binge‐Eating Disorder

open access: yesInternational Journal of Eating Disorders, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective The interplay between the gut microbiome and autonomic nervous system remains unexplored in binge‐eating disorder (BED). We aimed to explore specific microbial alterations in BED and examine their potential association with cardiac vagal tone as a distinct bio‐behavioral phenotype.

Construction of Chronic Kidney Disease Mouse Model Induced by Diets With Different Adenine Content

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
By administering a 4 weeks adenine diet to C57BL/6J mice, we identified 0.2% adenine in purified feed as the optimal chronic kidney disease model. This model induces severe renal damage, gut dysbiosis, uremic toxin accumulation, and CKD mineral bone disorder, providing a clinically relevant platform for mechanistic and therapeutic studies.

Dynamic interactions between the oral pathobiont Campylobacter concisus and the human gut microbiota [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiology Australia
The human gut microbiota is a highly dynamic ecosystem in which commensal, opportunistic and pathogenic microorganisms interact to influence the host’s physiology and disease risk.

Disease Features and Gastrointestinal Microbial Composition in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis from Two Independent Cohorts

open access: yesACR Open Rheumatology, 2022
Objective The study objective was to examine alterations in gastrointestinal (GI) microbial composition in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and to investigate the relationship between SSc features and GI microbiota using two independent ...

Immunomicrobial pathogenesis of periodontitis: keystones, pathobionts, and host response [PDF]

open access: yesTrends in Immunology, 2014
Recent studies have uncovered novel mechanisms underlying the breakdown of periodontal host-microbe homeostasis, which can precipitate dysbiosis and periodontitis in susceptible hosts. Dysbiotic microbial communities of keystone pathogens and pathobionts are thought to exhibit synergistic virulence whereby not only can they endure the host response but

Effects of a gut pathobiont in a gnotobiotic mouse model of childhood undernutrition [PDF]

open access: yesScience Translational Medicine, 2016
Pathobiont-associated cachexia in a gnotobiotic model of childhood undernutrition is determined by strain-level interactions within the gut microbiota.

Antibiotic-Induced Pathobiont Dissemination Accelerates Mortality in Severe Experimental Pancreatitis

open access: yes, 2017
Although antibiotic-induced dysbiosis has been demonstrated to exacerbate intestinal inflammation, it has been suggested that antibiotic prophylaxis may be beneficial in certain clinical conditions such as acute pancreatitis (AP).

Macrophage extracellular vesicles deliver Mef2d proteins to aggravate Bacteroides fragilis pathogenicity in type 2 diabetes arterial calcification

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
Bacteroides fragilis is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) arterial calcification and can be activated by macrophage‐derived extracellular vesicles (EVs). BF takes up EVs via receptor‐mediated endocytosis, and activation is induced by EV‐derived Mef2d, thereby inhibiting ArsR family transcriptional regulator transcription.

An IBD-associated pathobiont synergises with NSAID to promote colitis which is blocked by NLRP3 inflammasome and Caspase-8 inhibitors

open access: yes, 2023
Conflicting evidence exists on the association between consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and symptomatic worsening of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
