Rapid Pathogen Identification in Aqueous Humor Samples by Combining Fc-MBL@Fe3O4 Enrichment and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization–Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry Profiling

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2022
Prompt clinical diagnosis and antimicrobial therapy are key to managing infective endophthalmitis. The small volume of aqueous humor, low bacterial counts, and empirical medication by physicians make existing diagnostic methods time-consuming and ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Spatial transcriptomics uncovers vasculature-centered cellular interactions driving Japanese encephalitis progression in a mouse model

open access: yesNature Communications
The cellular interactions that drive the neuropathology of most neuroinvasive viruses remain elusive. We used Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) to infect female BALB/c mice and applied Stereo-seq to simultaneously capture host and viral transcriptomes in

Laboratory Screening of Control Agents Against Isolated Fungal Pathogens Causing Postharvest Diseases of Pitaya in Guizhou, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemistry, 2022
Pitaya, or dragon fruit, is a typical tropical fruit with an appealing taste and diverse health benefits to humans. The plantation of pitaya in Guizhou province in China has greatly boosted the income of local farmers and alleviated poverty. However, the

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Morphology, Molecular Identification, and Pathogenicity of Two Novel Fusarium Species Associated with Postharvest Fruit Rot of Cucurbits in Northern Thailand

open access: yesJournal of Fungi, 2022
Fruit rot of cucurbits caused by several pathogenic fungi has become an important postharvest disease worldwide. In 2022, fruit rot on watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and muskmelon (Cucumis melo) was observed during the postharvest storage phase in the ...

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Plants for planting; indirect evidence for the movement of a serious forest pathogen, Teratosphaeria destructans, in Asia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Fungal diseases caused by native pathogens and pathogens introduced with planting stock have a significant impact on exotic plantation forestry in the tropics.

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.
