Conserved binding mode but diverse interfaces of MreC‐PBP2 interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of abMreC reveals a conserved two β‐barrel architecture and provides structural insights into its role within the bacterial elongasome. The abMreC–abPBP2 complex model identifies the molecular basis of MreC‐mediated PBP2 recognition, contributing to the regulation of peptidoglycan synthesis.

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Development and evaluation of a multiplex molecular point-of-care assay for direct identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and prioritized non-tuberculous mycobacteria

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
ObjectiveThis study aimed to establish a multiplex molecular point-of-care assay called fastNTM incorporating an ultra-fast sample pre-treatment for direct identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and 8 non-tuberculous Mycobacteria ...

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

Rapid identification of Rhodococcus equi by a PCR assay targeting the choE gene [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The actinomycete Rhodococcus equi is an important pathogen of horses and an emerging opportunistic pathogen of humans. Identification of R. equi by classical bacteriological techniques is sometimes difficult, and misclassification of an isolate is not ...

Rapid and accurate sepsis diagnostics via a novel probe-based multiplex real-time PCR system

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Sepsis is a critical clinical emergency that requires prompt diagnosis and intervention. Its prevalence has increased due to the aging population and increased antibiotic resistance. Early identification and the use of innovative technologies are crucial

Structure‐forward targeting of claudins with synthetic binders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Claudins form the paracellular barriers between epithelial and endothelial tissues at tight junctions and are targets for molecular binders with the goal of modulating barrier permeability. Claudin‐binding molecules are relevant in drug delivery or in altering claudin interactions with disease‐causing proteins.

Killing them softly:managing pathogen polymorphism and virulence in spatially variable environments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Understanding why pathogen populations are genetically variable is vital because genetic variation fuels evolution, which often hampers disease control efforts.

Identification and Multigene Phylogenetic Analysis Reveal Alternaria as the Primary Pathogen Causing European Plum (Prunus domestica) Brown Spot in Xinjiang, China

open access: yesJournal of Fungi
European plum (Prunus domestica) orchards in the Kashi region, Xinjiang, China, suffer from fruit brown spot disease. The disease typically appears as red spots on the fruit surface that expand into brown necrotic lesions; affected fruit flesh can shrink,
