Results Pending Unit: Improving ED Flow and Patient Satisfaction [poster]

open access: yes, 2019
Introduction: Emergency departments (ED) are often faced with long wait times and lengths of stay, which leads to unsatisfied patients. A Results Pending Unit can improve the ED workflow and lead to shorter wait times and lengths of stay.

Applying Lean: Implementation of a Rapid Triage and Treatment System

open access: yesWestern Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2011
Objective: Emergency department (ED) crowding creates issues with patient satisfaction, long wait times and leaving the ED without being seen by a doctor (LWBS).

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Optimizing diagnostic and management pathways for patients with eosinophilia of unknown origin: a multidisciplinary protocol for urgent and non-urgent evaluation

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
IntroductionPersistent eosinophilia of unknown cause is a key feature of numerous health disorders. These conditions present diagnostic and management challenges, often leading to delayed treatment, increased morbidity and mortality and unnecessary ...

Pairwise agonist scanning-flow cytometry (PAS-FC) measures inside-out signaling and patient-specific response to combinatorial platelet agonists

open access: yesBioTechniques, 2013
Understanding the response of cells to multiple stimuli is vital for predicting donor specific responses and better understanding the signaling pathways involved.

Transcriptional profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles from prebiopsy prostate cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RNA profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) from blood samples of men undergoing prostate biopsy identifies transcripts associated with clinically significant prostate cancer. Integrative analysis with public tumor datasets links EV‐derived gene signatures to tumor stage and progression‐free survival, highlighting CASP3, XRCC2, and RIT1 ...

Standardizing admission and discharge processes to improve patient flow: A cross sectional study

open access: yesBMC Health Services Research, 2012
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate how hospital capacity was managed focusing on standardizing the admission and discharge processes. Methods This study was set in a 900-bed university affiliated hospital of the National Health Service ...

Longitudinal circulating tumor DNA profiling in patients with advanced endometrial cancer using an off‐the‐shelf targeted NGS panel

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Intratumour heterogeneity complicates precision management of advanced endometrial cancer. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) offers a minimally invasive strategy to capture tumor evolution and therapeutic resistance. Here, we compare tumor‐agnostic NGS with tumor‐informed ddPCR, outlining their relative sensitivity, concordance, and clinical implications ...

Lightweight interacting patient treatment processes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Processes concerning the diagnosis and treatment of patients cannot be straightjacketed into traditional production-like workflows. They can be best characterized as weakly-connected interacting light-weight workflows where tasks reside at different ...
