The peanut, also known as groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.), and the chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) are the two oil-protein-rich legume seed crops. Peanut occupies third place in the world as a source of edible oil. It originated in South America and is now grown in many countries, India and China being the largest producers (Table 1).
