Using singlet oxygen to synthesise the CDE-ring system of the pectenotoxins [PDF]
A non-classical route to the key CDE-ring fragment of the pectenotoxins has been developed which showcases a remarkable singlet oxygen-mediated cascade reaction sequence to install the complete DE ring system. This is the accepted version of the published

Sublethal exposure of eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica to the goniodomin-producing dinoflagellate Alexandrium monilatum: Fate of toxins, histopathology, and gene expression. [PDF]
Abstract Objective The dinoflagellate Alexandrium monilatum forms blooms during summer in tributaries of the lower Chesapeake Bay. Questions persist about the potential for A. monilatum to negatively affect aquatic organisms. Its main toxin, goniodomin A (GDA), a polyketide macrolide, has been shown to have adverse effects on animals, for example ...

Toxic species of the dinoflagellate genus Dinophysis can produce diarrheic toxins including okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxins (DTXs), and the non-diarrheic pectenotoxins (PTXs).

Concepts: The formation of stereochemically defined bis-THF units through a double cyclization and a hydride-shift-initiated route to spiroketals is described (see scheme; Xc=chiral auxiliary).

A Ruthenium(II) Polypyridyl Complex Disrupts Actin Cytoskeleton Assembly and Blocks Cytokinesis
The dinuclear RuII complex [(Ru(phen)2)2(tpphz)]4+ binds to G‐actin monomers, preventing assembly into F‐actin. This inhibits actin fibre assemblies within live cells and causes disruption to late cytokinesis by interfering with the function of endosomal sorting complexes required for transport (ESCRT) during abscission.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) of toxic species of the dinoflagellate genus Dinophysis are a threat to human health as they are mainly responsible for diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) in the consumers of contaminated shellfish.

Diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins and pectenotoxins (PTX) produced by endemic species of the genus Dinophysis, mainly D. acuta and D. acuminata, pose a big threat to public health, artisanal fisheries and the aquaculture industry in Southern ...
