Persistent Contamination of Octopuses and Mussels with Lipophilic Shellfish Toxins during Spring Dinophysis Blooms in a Subtropical Estuary

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2015
This study investigates the occurrence of diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) and their producing phytoplankton species in southern Brazil, as well as the potential for toxin accumulation in co-occurring mussels (Perna perna) and octopuses (Octopus ...

Shellfish contamination with lipophilic toxins and dietary exposure assessments from consumption of shellfish products in Shenzhen, China

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2021
Lipophilic shellfish toxins (LSTs) can cause human illness and therefore represent a serious threat to public health. Shellfish are the main dietary source of LSTs, but very few studies have appraised dietary exposure to LSTs through shellfish ...

Environmental and Biological Factors of Relevance to Shellfish Production in Northern Ireland: Insights From 20 Years of Regional Monitoring Data

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT A historical analysis was conducted to evaluate monitoring data in the coastal and estuarine waters of Northern Ireland over the 20‐year period between 2001 and 2022 to identify current and emerging concerns and gaps in analysis relative to the sustainability of the aquaculture industry.

Novel Insights on the Toxicity of Phycotoxins on the Gut through the Targeting of Enteric Glial Cells

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2019
In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that phycotoxins can impact intestinal epithelial cells and can cross the intestinal barrier to some extent.

Safety of oil from Schizochytrium limacinum (strain ATCC‐20889) for use in infant and follow‐on formula as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 23, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the safety of an oil derived from the microalga Schizochytrium sp. (strain ATCC‐20889) as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.

Accumulation and Biotransformation of Dinophysis Toxins by the Surf Clam Mesodesma donacium

open access: yesToxins, 2018
Surf clams, Mesodesma donacium, were shown to accumulate toxins from Dinophysis acuminata blooms. Only pectenotoxin 2 (PTX2) and some of its derivatives were found, and no toxins from the okadaic acid group were detected.

A Convergent Route to the CDEF-Tetracycle of Pectenotoxin-2

open access: yes, 2016
A convergent synthesis of the CDEF-tetracyclic region of pectenotoxin-2 (PTX-2) is described. The synthetic pathway derives from a head-to-tail union of 2 equiv of linalool to establish a stereodefined DEF-tricyclic aldehyde.

Field monitoring of copepodamides using a new application for solid phase adsorption toxin tracking

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 22, Issue 12, Page 877-888, December 2024.
Abstract Chemical signaling is ubiquitous in the marine environment. Plankton rely on chemical signals to find mates, hunt prey, and respond to threats, and these small‐scale interactions can propagate into community‐wide cascades and large‐scale ecological changes. The chemical signaling exchange in the open ocean is poorly understood, and fundamental

Distribution Characteristics and Environmental Control Factors of Lipophilic Marine Algal Toxins in Changjiang Estuary and the Adjacent East China Sea

open access: yesToxins, 2019
Marine algal toxins, highly toxic secondary metabolites, have significant influences on coastal ecosystem health and mariculture safety. The occurrence and environmental control factors of lipophilic marine algal toxins (LMATs) in the surface seawater of

Actin depolymerizing action by marine toxin, Pectenotoxin-2

open access: yesFolia Pharmacologica Japonica, 1999
Pectenotoxin-2 (PCTX-2), which is one of Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP), is a family of cyclic polyether macrolide toxin isolated from scallop Patinopecten yessoensis. Although PCTX-2 has a potent cytotoxic activities against several cancer cell lines, the biochemical activity of PCTX-2 has not been determined yet.
