Pectin is a heteropolysaccharide found in the primary cell walls of terrestrial plants. It is found along with other cell wall polymers such as cellulose and hemicelluloses. Its degradation is facilitated by about 15 different types of pectinases. Here, the focus is on the basic, applied, and production aspects of pectinases. Pectinases can be isolated

Pectinase production by Penicillium frequentans
World Journal of Microbiology & Biotechnology, 1991High activities of extracellular pectinase with viscosity-diminishing and reducing groups-releasing activities were produced by Penicillium frequentans after 48 h at 35°C, in agitated cultures supplemented with 0.5% citrus pectin and initial pH of 2.5. Under these conditions the fungus also produced high activity of pectinesterase.

Pectinase was found in the saliva of 23 species of aphids, one species of leafhopper, and one species of adelgid. The enzyme was not found in four species of aphids in their apterous form, and one species of psyllid, or in the saliva of the alate form of five species of aphids that contained pectinase in the apterous form.

Abstract Pectinolytic microbes have been industrially exploited for pectinases that are environment friendly enzymes and mineralize pectic substances present in the environment. This review provides structural understanding of the molecular determinants of pectin utilization, mechanisms driving catabolite selectivity and industrial applicability. The
