Bt agave: why it is time to explore a new biotechnological frontier
Drylands cover 41% of Earth, requiring sustainable crops. Agave, drought‐ and heat‐adapted, offers high‐value products with low water needs. Pests limit yield, yet Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry proteins, successful in other plants, remain unexploited in Agave.

Comparative phytochemical analysis of Lepidium sativum seed populations revealed environmentally driven variation in essential oil composition, while fatty acid profiles remained largely stable across populations. Benzyl nitrile was the dominant essential oil constituent, α‐linolenic acid was the major fatty acid, and all populations exhibited weak ...

Here, we demonstrate that polysaccharide chain length regulation plays a distinct role in enabling formation of a cyclic molecule important for the bacterial cell surface. However, this function is necessary, but not sufficient for the cyclic molecule's biosynthesis.

A newly identified virulence family from Pectobacterium parvum that binds plant defensive compounds (e.g., solanidine) with high affinity enhances bacterial tolerance and is required for full virulence. This trade‐off between defence and growth reveals a key host‐adaptation strategy.

Several strategies have been the object of studies to control soft rot in potatoes, but in many cases they are based on methods that, even though they present promising results, demand a high investment, besides the difficulty of being applied in large ...

Soil Pathobiome in Agroecosystems and Forests
This review synthesises current knowledge on the soil pathobiome across agroecosystems, horticulture, and forests, highlighting how climate change and intensive management disrupt microbial communities and promote pathogen accumulation. It emphasises soil health as a key component of the One Health framework, linking ecosystem, plant, animal, and human

Arabidopsis WRKY55 Transcription Factor Enhances Soft Rot Disease Resistance with ORA59 [PDF]
Pectobacterium is a major bacterial causal agent leading to soft rot disease in host plants. With the Arabidopsis-Pectobacterium pathosystem, we investigated the function of an Arabidopsis thaliana WRKY55 during defense responses to Pectobacterium ...

This review discusses bacteriophages' roles in soil ecosystems, highlighting their impact on nutrient cycling, plant health, and soil remediation, as well as animal‐mediated phage dispersal mechanisms. Overall, while bacteriophages have potential biotechnological applications, their negative effects on microbial functions and nutrient cycling highlight

The phytopathogenic Pectobacterium chrysanthemi (Pch) PY35 secretes multiple isozymes of plant cell wall degrading enzyme cellulases. We cloned a second cel gene that encodes cellulase in Pch PY35. The inserted 2 kb fragment was subcloned in order to geneate pPY710 (cel8Y). The structural organization of the cel8Y gene consists of an open reading frame

Phages that infect the oak pathogens Brenneria goodwinii and Gibbsiella quercinecans were isolated. The phages were able to effectively reduce bacterial populations of their respective hosts in vitro. However, when applied in planta, the phages did not reduce host populations and instead phages and bacteria co‐existed over time.
