Penicillin-resistant Variants of Pneumococci [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Microbiology, 1968
All of the 74 strains of pneumococci isolated from human infections from 1963 to 1964 proved to be uniformly and highly susceptible to penicillin. Of these strains, 15 were identified by capsule-swelling reactions and were submitted to serial transfer in the presence of increasing concentrations of penicillin.

Antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the oral cavity of paraguayan participants from Coronel Oviedo, year 2021

open access: yesMemorias del Instituto de Investigaciones en Ciencias de la Salud
A cross-sectional study was carried out to identify the resistance profile of Staphylococcus aureus colonizing the oral cavity of patients. Sampling was carried out with sterile swabs. Mannitol-positive colonies were cultured on blood agar, identifying S.

Bacterial Resistance to Penicillin G by Decreased Affinity of Penicillin-Binding Proteins: A Mathematical Model

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2003
Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis have very similar mechanisms of resistance to penicillin G. Although penicillin resistance is now common in S. pneumoniae, it is still rare in N. meningitidis.

Using Hospital Antibiogram Data To Assess Regional Pneumococcal Resistance to Antibiotics

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2003
Antimicrobial resistance to penicillin and macrolides in Streptococcus pneumoniae has increased in the United States over the past decade. Considerable geographic variation in susceptibility necessitates regional resistance tracking.

Penicillin resistance and other predictors of mortality in pneumococcal bacteremia in a population with high human immunodeficiency virus seroprevalence.

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 1999
Rates of invasive disease caused by penicillin-resistant pneumococci are rising. Previous reports have found no association between resistant pneumococci and increased mortality.

Genetics of high level penicillin resistance in clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 1995
Mosaic penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) 1A, 2X and 2B genes were cloned from four clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae with levels of susceptibility to penicillin ranging from 1.5 to 16 micrograms benzylpenicillin ml-1.

Serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility of group B streptococci in pregnant women: results from a Swiss tertiary centre

open access: yesSwiss Medical Weekly, 2014
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the rates of penicillin, clindamycin and erythromycin resistance and the serotype distribution among isolates of group B streptococcus (GBS) obtained from pregnant women at the University Hospital of Bern in Switzerland.

Emergence of macrolide and penicillin resistance among invasive pneumococcal isolates in Germany.

open access: yesJournal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, 2002
Continuous nationwide surveillance of antibiotic resistance in invasive pneumococcal disease was performed in Germany between 1992 and 2000, with a total of 2586 strains being isolated.

Antimicrobial resistance in clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae in a tertiary hospital in Kuwait, 1997–2007: Implications for empiric therapy

open access: yesJournal of Infection and Public Health, 2010
Summary: Objective: This study evaluated antibiotic resistance trends in Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated in a tertiary hospital in Kuwait and its implications for empiric therapy.
