Clinical Infectious Diseases, 1979
Between 1868 and 1873, a surgeon, Theodor Billroth, performed experiments with cultures of bacteria and molds (which he believed to be two aspects of a single form of life) to investigate their role in "accidental wound diseases." Some of the cultures teemed with rounded microorganisms arranged in chains; Billroth chose to call them streptococci.

The presence of Penicillium and Penicillium mycotoxins in food wastes
International Journal of Food Microbiology, 2004A total of 97 samples (48 summer and 49 winter) of food waste from private households were investigated for Penicillium and for mycotoxins. Twenty-five Penicillium species were isolated and Penicillium crustosum, Penicillium brevicompactum, Penicillium chrysogenum, Penicillium expansum, Penicillium roqueforti, Penicillium spinulosum, Penicillium ...

Mitosis in Penicillium chrysogenum and Penicillium notatum
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1971Vegetative nuclear division was studied in Penicillium notatum and P. chrysogenum using light microscopy of stained preparations. The results obtained revealed mitoses in which duplicate sets of chromosomes were equitably divided into daughter genomes by successive division stages.

Pigments of Penicillium herquei
Nature, 1951DURING a recent morphological study of Penicillium herquei, we became interested in the curious change in pigmentation induced by variation of the substrate, a phenomenon which had been reported by Bainier and Sartory1 when the fungus was described in 1912.
