Between 1868 and 1873, a surgeon, Theodor Billroth, performed experiments with cultures of bacteria and molds (which he believed to be two aspects of a single form of life) to investigate their role in "accidental wound diseases." Some of the cultures teemed with rounded microorganisms arranged in chains; Billroth chose to call them streptococci.

A new species ofPenicillium belonging to theP.funiculosum series of the Biverticillata — Symmetrica section is described from the rhizosphere ofBrassica campestris var.toria. The species is characterized by the presence of penicilli with 8–12 metulae on malt-extract agar and a very limited sporulation on Czapek-Dox agar. The species is namedPenicillium

Mitosis in Penicillium chrysogenum and Penicillium notatum
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1971Vegetative nuclear division was studied in Penicillium notatum and P. chrysogenum using light microscopy of stained preparations. The results obtained revealed mitoses in which duplicate sets of chromosomes were equitably divided into daughter genomes by successive division stages.

A Revised Key to Penicillium Subgenus Penicillium
1986The standard description of Penicillium aurantiogriseum Dierckx has been expanded slightly to include isolates with slow growth rate, grey-green conidia and/or smooth-walled stipes. An amended dichotomous key is provided.
