Speakers were asked to provide quantitative data on the performance of different xylose- (or, in one instance, arabinose-) fermenting strains in laboratory media and, where possible, in “industrial” media prepared by hydrolysis of native lignocellulosic substrates. The data provided are presented in Table 1, which gives an indication of the performance

Pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is also known as Warburg–Lipmann–Dickens–Horecker pathway. The main functions of PPP pathway are reductant and pentose generation. However, no ATP is directly produced in this pathway. Pentose pathway occurs in cytosol. Unlike glycolysis and citric acid cycle where reactions are directional, here interconversion of sugar

Pentose metabolism and pentosuria
The American Journal of Medicine, 1959Abstract The metabolism of pentoses is reviewed. The pentose phosphate pathway (6-phosphogluconate oxidation pathway) is the source of tissue d-ribose and perhaps d-2-deoxyribose as well. In certain tissues it also contributes to the net oxidation of glucose and probably supplies reduced triphosphopyridine nucleotide for biosynthetic reactions. Little

Pentose estimation by the orcinol method, with particular reference to plasma pentose
Clinica Chimica Acta, 1964Abstract Modification of the orcinol reaction for the quantitative estimation of pentose was studied particularly in relation to interference by glucose. It was shown that variations in concentration of orcinol, concentration of ferric chloride, time of heating and batch of orcinol alter considerably the pentose-orcinol and glucose-orcinol reactions.

ENZYMES OF PENTOSE BIOSYNTHESIS: I. SEPARATION OF PENTOSE CYCLE ENZYMES OF ESCHERICHIA COLI
Canadian Journal of Biochemistry, 1966A study of the enzymes of the pentose cycle in Escherichia coli has been undertaken. Procedures are reported for separating the cell extract into fractions containing transketolase, D-xylulose-5-phosphate-3-epimerase, and transaldolase and phosphoribose isomerase.
