open access: yesRevista Ceres, 2016

The role of cell size in shaping responses to oxygen and temperature in fruit flies

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 37, Issue 5, Page 1269-1279, May 2023., 2023
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The body size of an animal is strongly coupled to key ecological traits such as fecundity, mortality and growth. Ectothermic animals mature at smaller body sizes in warmer conditions and under low oxygen availability (hypoxia).

Vertically stratified frugivore community composition and interaction frequency in a liana fruiting across forest strata

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 55, Issue 3, Page 650-664, May 2023., 2023
Our findings suggest a continuous shift in the frugivore community composition along the vertical gradient of a plant species fruiting across forest strata, from a few generalized frugivores in the understorey to a diverse set of specialized frugivores in the canopy.

Functional diversity of experimental annual plant assemblages drives plant responses to biological soil crusts in gypsum systems

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 37, Issue 3, Page 488-503, March 2023., 2023
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Biological soil crusts (BSC) are complex biotic aggregates comprised of lichens, cyanobacteria, algae and other micro‐organism that are known to differently affect plant development along life cycle by selecting plant functional traits based on species‐specific effects.

Variation in red fox Vulpes vulpes diet in five continents

open access: yesMammal Review, Volume 52, Issue 3, Page 328-342, July 2022., 2022
We reviewed the diet of the red fox as described in 217 studies including 13 food categories. Globally, red fox diet was dominated by small mammals and invertebrates. The proportion of each of the prey categories in red fox diet varied with environmental and anthropogenic variables and sampling method.

Predation risk can modify the foraging behaviour of frugivorous carnivores: Implications of rewilding apex predators for plant–animal mutualisms

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 91, Issue 5, Page 1024-1035, May 2022., 2022
Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) foraging placidly on Iberian pear fruits (Pyrus bourgaeana) in one fruit depot created for the field experiment of this study outside Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) ranges. Abstract Apex predators play key roles in food webs and their recovery can trigger trophic cascades in some ecosystems.

Evolution of fruit and seed traits during almond naturalization

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 3, Page 686-699, March 2022., 2022
Almond naturalization is consistent with strong directional selection on fruits and seeds, leading to smaller and more toxic seeds encased in harder endocarps. Accordingly, we propose that feralization of this crop is, at least to some degree, driven by adaptive evolution of dispersal and recruitment traits.

open access: yesObesity Reviews, Volume 22, Issue S5, Octubre 2021., 2021
