Perillaldehyde Controls Postharvest Black Rot Caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata in Sweet Potatoes [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
Black rot caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata is the most damaging postharvest disease among sweet potatoes. Black rot can be controlled by synthetic fungicides, but these synthetic fungicides also have several negative effects. Perillaldehyde (PAE), a major component of the herb perilla, is an effective and eco-friendly method of controlling this disease.

Activation of Cyanate Anions by Phosphine Radical Cations Enables Formal Hydrocarbamoylation of Alkenes

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 4, 22 January 2026.
A photocatalytic formal hydrocarbamoylation reaction that employs a cyanate anion as the C1 source and provides N‐acyl iminophosphorane products from activated alkenes is described. Mechanistic investigations suggest generation of a phosphoranyl radical by addition of the cyanate anion to a phosphine radical cation, which enables the delivery of the ...

Natural Product‐Induced Ferroptosis to Overcome Therapy Resistance in Aggressive Cancers

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Natural products trigger ferroptosis through iron overload, glutathione depletion, glutathione peroxidase 4 inhibition, and reactive oxygen species accumulation, selectively targeting aggressive, and drug‐resistant cancers. Polyphenols, alkaloids and terpenoids emerge as promising multi‐target agents to overcome therapy resistance and improve future ...

Essential oils as bioherbicides: effects of orange and citronella oils on weed germination and early growth

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 82, Issue 10, Page 9748-9763, October 2026.
Essential oils from orange and citronella showed dose‐dependent inhibition of weed germination and early growth, highlighting their potential as bioherbicides and sustainable tools for integrated weed management. Abstract BACKGROUND Increasing selection of herbicide‐resistant weed biotypes has intensified the search for alternatives to the intensive ...

Shiso (Perilla frutescens var. crispa) Increases Subjective Pleasantness of Steamed Rice With an Enhanced Sulfur‐Odor

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2026.
Steamed rice can develop a sulfur‐related odor that may reduce its perceived pleasantness. We investigated whether adding shiso to onion‐odor rice could improve sensory pleasantness, using FF‐2020S odor analysis and sensory evaluation with 41 female participants.

Nucleotide Metabolism in Health and Disease

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 8, August 2026.
Nucleotide metabolism, including de novo synthesis, salvage pathways, and catabolism, when dysregulated contributes to cancer, immune disorders, metabolic and urological diseases, and radiation injury. Metabolites such as adenosine, cGAMP, NAD, and cAMP and enzymes like RNR are promising therapeutic targets and biomarkers.
