Cell cracking: Permeabilizing cells to macromolecular probes

The ball homogenizer described here can render cells of diameter greater than approximately 10 microns permeable to macromolecular probes. This approach may be useful for studying a variety of cellular processes which require structural integrity for function, such as secretion.

Chemical Permeabilization of Cells for Intracellular Product Release

This chapter reviews the concept of chemical permeabilization of microbial cells as it applies to the recovery of intracellular products. The topic is considered in light of the disadvantages of mechanical disruption. The chapter introduces other uses of chemical permeabilization and permeabilization of higher eucaryotes.
