DNA damage in digestive gland and mantle tissue of the mussel Perna perna

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2003
Data concerning the susceptibility of DNA to damage by reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and other endogenous compounds produced by physiological stress in marine organisms is lacking, especially in bivalve mollusks. In this article, we analyzed the background levels of lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA), 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine ...

Identification of homologs of the mammalian P-glycoprotein in the mussel, Perna perna

Marine Environmental Research, 2000
Abstract The ATP-binding cassette superfamily of proteins includes various ATP-driven transporters that are structurally characterized by a conserved ATP-binding domain. This family of proteins is able to transport drugs, inorganic ions, amino acids, proteins and sugars, and includes P-glycoprotein (Pgp), which is responsible for multidrug resistance

Population genetics of the brown mussel Perna perna in southern Africa

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 1992
We studied geographic variation in the allozyme frequencies of Gpi, Mpi, Pep-1 and Pgd in 14 samples of Perna perna collected over 3700 km from Swakopmund, Namibia to Cape Vidal, South Africa. Unlike other species of mussels, Perna shows a general lack of heterozygote deficits.
