Effect of hydrogen peroxide on the initiation of microsomal lipid peroxidation
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1983Hydrogen peroxide reacts with reduced transition metals to generate the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (X OH), most often proposed as the predominant species for initiating microsomal lipid peroxidation. To assess the potential involvement of X OH, generated from hydrogen peroxide, in microsomal lipid peroxidation, we have altered the concentration ...

For a long time lipid peroxidation has only been considered a deleterious process leading to disruption of biomembranes and thus, to cellular dysfunction. However, when restricted to a certain cellular compartment and tightly regulated, lipid peroxidation may have beneficial effects.
