Investigating the Host Binding Signature on the Plasmodium falciparum PfEMP1 Protein Family
The Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1) family plays a central role in antigenic variation and cytoadhesion of P. falciparum infected erythrocytes. PfEMP1 proteins/var genes are classified into three main subfamilies (UpsA, UpsB, and UpsC) that are hypothesized to have different roles in binding and disease.

Haplotypes of the Endothelial Protein C Receptor (EPCR) Gene are Not Associated with Severe Malaria in Tanzania. [PDF]
Endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) was recently identified as a key receptor for Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 mediating sequestration of P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes in patients suffering from severe malaria.

Severe malaria: what's new on the pathogenesis front? [PDF]
Plasmodium falciparum causes the most severe and fatal form of malaria in humans with over half a million deaths each year. Cerebral malaria, a complex neurological syndrome of severe falciparum malaria, is often fatal and represents a major public ...

Antithrombotic but not anticoagulant activity of the thrombin‐binding RNA aptamer Apta‐1
Background and Purpose Pharmacological intervention of thrombosis is challenging, requiring a fined tune balance between beneficial antithrombotic effect versus risk of major bleeding complications. In this investigation, we elucidated the antithrombotic capacity of the novel 90‐mer RNA aptamer Apta‐1 and its underlying mechanism of action ...

Different aspects of emotional processes in apathy: Application of the French translated dimensional apathy scale [PDF]
Apathy is a behavioural symptom that occurs in neuropsychiatric, neurological and neurodegenerative disease. It is defined as a lack of motivation and/or a quantitative reduction of goal-directed behaviour. Levy and Dubois Cerebral Cortex, 16(7), 916–928

Malaria is a parasitic infectious disease considered a public health problem. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a complication in malaria‐infected individuals with a high mortality rate (80% to 100%) and can occur before, during, or after antimalarial drug treatment. Although inflammation and epithelial/endothelial injury pathways have been

Ex-vivo cytoadherence phenotypes of Plasmodium falciparum strains from Malian children with hemoglobins A, S, and C. [PDF]
Sickle hemoglobin (Hb) S and HbC may protect against malaria by reducing the expression of Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1) on the surface of parasitized red blood cells (RBCs), thereby weakening their cytoadherence to ...

Cytoadhesion of P. falciparum‐infected red blood cells to endothelial cells leads to significant upregulation of genes associated with immune response, nucleosome assembly, NF‐kappa B signaling, and angiogenesis in these cells. Increasing the temperature to 40°C (fever) led to further upregulation of many genes, particularly those involved in cytokine ...

Expansion of Lysine-rich repeats in Plasmodium proteins generates novel localisation sequences that target the periphery of the host Erythrocyte [PDF]
Repetitive low-complexity sequences, mostly assumed to have no function, are common in proteins that are exported by the malaria parasite into its host erythrocyte.
