Phagocytes and demonstration of Phagocytic activity
In Greek, “Phagein” is for “to eat” or “devour”, and “-cyte” suffix in biology denoting “cell”. Phagocytes are cells that protect the body by ingesting harmful foreign particles, bacteria and dead or dying cells. They are essential for fighting infections and for subsequent immunity. One litre of human blood contains about six billion phagocytes.

Guinea pigs sublethally infected with aerosolized Legionella pneumophila develop humoral and cell-mediated immune responses and are protected against lethal aerosol challenge. A model for studying host defense against lung infections caused by intracellular pathogens. [PDF]
We have employed the guinea pig model of L. pneumophila infection, which mimics Legionnaires' disease in humans both clinically and pathologically, to study humoral and cell-mediated immune responses to L.

A new method for yeast phagocytosis analysis by flow cytometry [PDF]
Herein we developed a method based on the quenching effect of propidium iodide over Sytox-Green fluorescence to assess yeast phagocytosis by flow cytometry.

Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and TLR4 gene expression in canine heart [PDF]
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are archetypal pattern recognition receptors of immediate importance for an efficacious innate immune response. TLRs exhibit marked differential tissue activity and their levels within a discrete cell type can be highly dynamic.

Complement Depletion Improves Human Red Blood Cell Reconstitution in Immunodeficient Mice
We have previously shown that human red blood cells (hRBCs) are subject to robust rejection by macrophages in immunodeficient mice. In this study, we found that mouse serum induces hRBC adherence to murine phagocytic cells, including professional ...

Downregulation of Tumor Necrosis Factor Expression in the Human Mono-Mac-6 Cell Line [PDF]
Mono-Mac-6 cells, but not U937 cells, can be Induced to rapidly express tumor necrosis factor (TNF) mRNA and protein when triggered with Ilpopolysaccharlde (LPS) at 1 pg/mI. Preincubatlon of the cells for 3 d with low amounts of LPS (10 ng/mI) results In
