Displacement Convexity and Minimal Fronts at Phase Boundaries [PDF]

open access: yesArchive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2008
We show that certain free energy functionals that are not convex with respect to the usual convex structure on their domain of definition, are strictly convex in the sense of displacement convexity under a natural change of variables. We use this to show that in certain cases, the only critical points of these functionals are minimizers.

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Displacement-free stereoscopic phase measuring deflectometry based on phase difference minimization

open access: yesOptics Express, 2020
In this paper, we propose a phase difference minimization algorithm to measure the specular surface shape in a displacement-free stereoscopic phase measuring deflectometry (PMD) system. The presented system is capable of solving the height-normal ambiguity appearing in a PMD system without moving any system component.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Encoding a Qubit into a Cavity Mode in Circuit-QED using Phase Estimation

open access: yes, 2015
Gottesman, Kitaev and Preskill have formulated a way of encoding a qubit into an oscillator such that the qubit is protected against small shifts (translations) in phase space.

DYNAMICS IN DISPLACIVE PHASE TRANSITIONS

open access: yesLe Journal de Physique Colloques, 1981
First passage rates of an interacting, anharmonic system of phonons (some of which are unstable, soft) are calculated as function of temperature. The classical equations of motion are amended by a nonlocal term representing tunnelling.

Conserved structural motifs in PAS, LOV, and CRY proteins regulate circadian rhythms and are therapeutic targets

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cryptochrome and PAS/LOV proteins play intricate roles in circadian clocks where they act as both sensors and mediators of protein–protein interactions. Their ubiquitous presence in signaling networks has positioned them as targets for small‐molecule therapeutics. This review provides a structural introduction to these protein families.

Nonlinear Hall Effects in Strained Twisted Bilayer WSe$_2$

open access: yes, 2020
Recently, it has been pointed out that the twisting of bilayer WSe$_2$ would generate topologically non-trivial flat bands near the Fermi energy.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
