Formulation of the twisted-light-matter interaction at the phase singularity: Beams with strong magnetic fields [PDF]
The formulation of the interaction of matter with singular light fields needs special care. In a recent article [Phys.~Rev.~A {\bf 91}, 033808 (2015)] we have shown that the Hamiltonian describing the interaction of a twisted light beam having parallel ...

Critical points and symmetries of a free energy function for biaxial nematic liquid crystals [PDF]
We describe a general mean field model for the free energy function for a homogeneous medium of mutually interacting molecules, based on the formalism for a biaxial nematic liquid crystal set out by Katriel et al (1986) in an influential paper in Liquid ...

Thermodynamic phase transitions and shock singularities [PDF]
We show that, under rather general assumptions on the form of the entropy function, the energy balance equation for a system in thermodynamic equilibrium is equivalent to a set of nonlinear equations of hydrodynamic type. This set of equations is integrable via the method of characteristics and it provides the equation of state for the gas.

Observation of an exceptional point in a non-Hermitian metasurface
Exceptional points (EPs), also known as non-Hermitian degeneracies, have been observed in parity-time symmetric metasurfaces as parity-time symmetry breaking points.

Observation of robust subwavelength phase singularity in chiral medium
. Photonic devices that exhibit both sensitivity and robustness have long been sought; yet, these characteristics are thought to be mutually exclusive; through sensitivity, a sensor responds to external stimuli, whereas robustness embodies the inherent ...

Regularity for the two‐phase singular perturbation problems [PDF]
We prove that an a priori BMO gradient estimate for the two phase singular perturbation problem implies Lipschitz regularity for the limits. This problem arises in the mathematical theory of combustion where the reaction-diffusion is modelled by the $p$-Laplacian. A key tool in our approach is the weak energy identity.

Shock dynamics of phase diagrams
A thermodynamic phase transition denotes a drastic change of state of a physical system due to a continuous change of thermodynamic variables, as for instance pressure and temperature.

Phase singularities for image representation and matching [PDF]
Phase features are widely used in image processing and representation due to their stability to deformation and noise. However, phase singularities, where the signals vanish, are generally regarded as harmful and unreliable facts. In this paper, on the contrary, we will show that phase singularities calculated by Laguerre-Gauss filter contain important ...

Spin angular momentum density in the tight focus of a light field with phase and polarization singularities [PDF]
For a light field with both phase and polarization singularities at its center, expressions are obtained that describe the distribution of the spin angular momentum (SAM) density in the sharp focal spot of an aplanatic system.
