Influence of Fibrosis Amount and Patterns on Ventricular Arrhythmogenesis and Pumping Efficacy: Computational Study

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2021
Myocardial fibrosis is an integral component of most forms of heart failure. Clinical and computational studies have reported that spatial fibrosis pattern and fibrosis amount play a significant role in ventricular arrhythmogenicity.

Confinement in Three Dimensions and the Electroweak Phase Transition [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
The infrared behaviour of the standard model at finite temperature is determined by the confining phase of the SU(2)-Higgs model in three dimensions. Due to the Landau singularity of the three-dimensional gauge theory the perturbative treatment of the ...

Thermodynamic phase transitions and shock singularities [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2011
We show that, under rather general assumptions on the form of the entropy function, the energy balance equation for a system in thermodynamic equilibrium is equivalent to a set of nonlinear equations of hydrodynamic type. This set of equations is integrable via the method of characteristics and it provides the equation of state for the gas.

Generation of unconventional OAM waves by a circular array

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering, 2019
In recent years, orbital angular momentum (OAM) waves have been applied to improve the performance of radar target detection and imaging. However, the phase singularity of conventional OAM beams and the doughnut-shaped intensity distribution will degrade

The inspection paradox: An important consideration in the evaluation of rotor lifetimes in cardiac fibrillation

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2022
Background and Objective: Renewal theory is a statistical approach to model the formation and destruction of phase singularities (PS), which occur at the pivots of spiral waves.

On the impossibility of finite-time splash singularities for vortex sheets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In fluid dynamics, an interface splash singularity occurs when a locally smooth interface self-intersects in finite time. By means of elementary arguments, we prove that such a singularity cannot occur in finite time for vortex sheet evolution, i.e.

Observation of an exceptional point in a non-Hermitian metasurface

open access: yesNanophotonics, 2020
Exceptional points (EPs), also known as non-Hermitian degeneracies, have been observed in parity-time symmetric metasurfaces as parity-time symmetry breaking points.

Singularities of the Mixed State Phase [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2002
A recent proposal of Sjoqvist et.al. to extend Pancharatnam's criterion for phase difference between two different pure states to the case of mixed states in quantum mechanics is analyzed and the existence of phase singularities in the parameter space of an interference experiment with particles in mixed states pointed out.

Observation of a Chiral State in a Microwave Cavity

open access: yes, 2003
A microwave experiment has been realized to measure the phase difference of the oscillating electric field at two points inside the cavity. The technique has been applied to a dissipative resonator which exhibits a singularity -- called exceptional point
