Oxalic Acid Treatment: Short-Term Effects on Enzyme Activities, Vitellogenin Content, and Residual Oxalic Acid Content in House Bees, Apis mellifera L.

open access: yesInsects
Honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) have to face many challenges, including Varroa destructor infestation, associated with viral transmission. Oxalic acid is one of the most common treatments against Varroa.

Chitosan‐protected dsRNA increases efficacy against Helicoverpa armigera without compromising biosafety for pollinators

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Chitosan/tripolyphosphate/double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) nanoparticles enhance RNA interference efficacy of orally delivered dsRNA against Helicoverpa armigera. Nanoparticles reduce the LC50 and do not cause deleterious effects or toxicity on beneficial insects.

Insights on cytotoxic cells of the colonial ascidian Botryllus schlosseri [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Morula cells (MCs) represent the most abundant circulating hemocyte of the compound ascidian Botryllus schlosseri. They are cytotoxic cells involved in the rejection reaction between contacting, genetically incompatible colonies.

The Effects of Noise on the Juvenile Life Stage of Crustaceans: Behavioral, Cellular, and Molecular Responses in Procambarus clarkii

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Juvenile Procambarus clarkii exposed to noise exhibited behavioral changes, shifts in enzymatic activity, and altered expression of stress and immune genes. The findings highlight the sensitivity of invertebrate juveniles to anthropogenic acoustic pollution.

The ascidian prophenoloxidase activating system [PDF]

open access: yesInvertebrate Survival Journal, 2009
Phenoloxidases/tyrosinases initiate melanin synthesis in almost all organisms, and are involved in different biological activities such as the colour change of human hair and the browning or blackening of fruit skin etc.

Offspring Dependency Is Not Reflected in the Social Immunity of Three Burying Beetle Species

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Nicrophorus pustulatus, Nicrophorus vespilloides, and Nicrophorus orbicollis are three burying beetle species that differ both in their ecology and in the dependency of their offspring on parental care. This gradient of offspring dependency might be reflected in the parents' social immunity capabilities and/or investment.

Cellular immune response of Amblyomma sculptum and Amblyomma americanum to entomopathogenic fungi: Implications for biological tick control

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Amblyomma sculptum showed a plasmatocyte‐dominant haemocyte profile. Beauveria bassiana increased plasmatocytes and reduced granulocytes, whereas Metarhizium robertsii did not cause significant changes. Amblyomma americanum showed a granulocyte‐dominant haemocyte profile. Beauveria bassiana reduced total haemocytes and granulocytes. B.

Comparative analysis of immune responses in ovipositing and non‐ovipositing females of European earwig Analyse comparative de la réponse immunitaire avant et après la ponte chez le forficule européen

open access: yesPhysiological Entomology, EarlyView.
Oviposition and care decrease the total haemocyte concentration. Oviposition and care affect haemocyte type proportions. Serratia marcescens challenge does not affect the immune cell parameters. Abstract Reproduction and immunity are essential biological processes that compete for resources and energy.

Disease prevention strategies for QX disease (Marteilia sydneyi) of Sydney rock oysters (Saccostrea glomerata) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The Sydney rock oyster (Saccostrea glomerata) forms the basis of an important aquaculture industry on the east coast of Australia. During the 1970s, production of S.
