Phytochemical profile and antioxidant capacity of virgin olive oil obtained from the olive cultivar ‘Roghiani’ from different regions of northern Libya

open access: yesGrasas y Aceites, 2018
The aim of this work was to determine the fatty acids (FA), tocopherols, phenols, and antioxidant capacity (AC) of five virgin olive oils (VOO) obtained from the olive cultivar ‘Roghiani’, from different regions of northern Libya during the crop year ...

Single‐Crystal Castability of CM186LC Nickel‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The optimal conditions to obtain single‐crystal (SX) castings of the directional solidification nickel‐based superalloy CM186LC, are investigated. Cylindrical samples are cast via a proprietary SX Bridgman process. The effect of solidification rates (V) ranging from 1 to 10 mm⋅min−1 on the microstructure is explored.

Visible light enhances the antimicrobial effect of some essential oils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The photodisinfection is a topical, broad spectrum antimicrobial technology, targeting bacteria, virus, fungi, and protozoa effective for single cells as for biofilms. Natural molecules have been studied less than synthetic agents in the process but they

Orange juice (poly)phenols are highly bioavailable in humans.

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2014
BACKGROUND We assessed the bioavailability of orange juice (poly)phenols by monitoring urinary flavanone metabolites and ring fission catabolites produced by the action of the colonic microbiota.

Unlocking the Power of Quercetin‐Encapsulated Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles: A Multifunctional Approach to Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) are investigated for bone regeneration given their remarkable structural and functional properties. MBGNs are functionalized with Mn and Cu and incorporated with quercetin, a natural flavonoid exhibiting antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

The urinary phenolic acid profile varies between younger and older adults after a polyphenol-rich meal despite limited differences in in vitro colonic catabolism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Purpose: To investigate whether age influences colonic polyphenol metabolism. Methods: Healthy participants, younger (n = 8; 23–43 years) and older (n = 13; 51–76 years), followed a 3-day low-polyphenol diet (LPD) and a 3-day high-polyphenol diet ...

A Simplified Method to Estimate Sc-CO2 Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Different Matrices: Chili Pepper vs. Tomato By-Products

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2017
In the last few decades, the search for bioactive compounds or “target molecules” from natural sources or their by-products has become the most important application of the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) process.

3D Bioprinting of Thick Adipose Tissues with Integrated Vascular Hierarchies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
An advanced 3D bioprinting technique is used here to create thick adipose tissues with a central, vessel and extensive branching. The construct is made using alginate, gelatin and collagen‐based bioinks. Flow through the complex vessel network is demonstrated as well as its successful integration with a femoral artery following implantation in a rat ...

Deciphering the Origin of Higher Shell Coordination on Single Iron Catalysts for Resilient Modulating Persulfate Oxidation Into Singlet Oxygen Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
This study reveals that higher shell S coordination can effectively modulate the spin state of FeN4 site via long‐range electronic interactions, giving rise to the oriented generation of singlet oxygen from peroxymonosulfate activation. Abstract Precise manipulation of coordination structure of single‐atom sites and establishment of schematic ...

The Inner Quality Concept for food, based on life processes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
How can we adequately express the quality of food produced by organic agriculture? To answer this research question, we defined a concept of ‘inner quality’ (formerly called ‘vital quality’) based on the life processes growth and differentiation, and ...
