LorDist: a novel method for calculating the distance based on functional data analysis with application to longitudinal microbial data

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Longitudinal human microbial data offer insights into microbiome dynamics over time. Traditional methods usually overlook temporal relationships among samples from the same subject.

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Dynamic single-cell transcriptomics reveals lsamp-guided neural network formation in male S. japonicum driving female reproduction

open access: yesNature Communications
Sexual maturation and egg production in schistosomes require sustained male-female pairing, yet the cellular dynamics underlying this process remain poorly understood.

Lysyl oxidase (LOX)‐mediated remodeling of the extracellular matrix

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The lysyl oxidase (LOX) family of enzymes drives extracellular matrix remodeling by oxidizing collagen, elastin, and fibronectin, promoting covalent cross‐link formation. This activity regulates tissue architecture and mechanical properties, while its dysregulation contributes to fibrosis, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, connective tissue disorders ...

H3K4me1 directs H3K36me2 and H3K36me3 deposition in land plants

open access: yesNature Communications
Monomethylation of histone 3 lysine 4 (H3K4me1) marks enhancers in mammals. However, the function of H3K4me1 in plants remains largely unclear. Here, we present the genome-wide distribution of H3K4me1 in diverse species across evolution, revealing a ...

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

Cryo-ET and MD simulations reveal that dynein-2 is tuned for binding to the A-tubule of the ciliary doublet

open access: yesThe EMBO Journal
Eukaryotic cilia and flagella are thin structures present on the surface of cells, playing vital roles in signaling and cellular motion. Cilia assembly depends on intraflagellar transport (IFT) along doublet microtubules (doublets).

The Role of Homocysteine in Pediatric MASLD: A Bipotential Biomarker of Cardiovascular Risk and Liver Fibrosis

open access: yesLife
The increasing prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD) in children requires robust, non-invasive biomarkers to enable accurate disease staging and risk stratification.

Digital Phenotyping

open access: yes, 2022
This thesis is centered around the development and application of a digital platform for passive behavioral human subject research. This platform named Behapp (https://behapp.com), developed at the University of Groningen, makes use of mobile ‘apps’ to passively record various attributes related to social and explorative behavior through the smartphones

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...
