Life cycle traits of Philodina roseola Ehrenberg, 1830 (Rotifera, Bdelloidea), a model organism for bioassays [PDF]

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2016
This paper describes experimental results on the life cycle of the rotifer Philodina roseola cultured in the laboratory. Detailed information on life-cycle parameters of a certain species provides a deep understanding and contributes to a better ...

Local Adaptation? Enhanced Fitness Under Regional UVB Intensities in a Rock Pool Bdelloid Rotifer. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Bdelloids from the Chihuahuan Desert appear to have adapted to regional UVB intensities in a localized manner. Bdelloids exposed to winter or summer levels of UVB intensity had a longer lifespan and a higher net reproductive rate. ABSTRACT Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can decrease lifespan and reduce fecundity in aquatic invertebrates ...

Discordant spatiotemporal dynamics of functional and phylogenetic diversity of rotiferan communities exposed to aquaculture effluent. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2023
Effluent from aquaculture is an anthropogenic environmental burden, containing organic matter, nutrients and suspended solids that affect water quality in water bodies of high biodiversity and conservation value. Stepping beyond taxon diversity, we used functional and phylogenetic diversities of rotifera to identify factors affecting their community ...

Contributions of mean temperature and temperature variation to population stability and community diversity. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2022
Climatic changes are predicted to alter mean temperatures and fluctuations in temperature. Here, we show that increased mean temperatures are generally associated with negative impacts on biodiversity. However, these negative impacts can be partially reduced if fluctuations in temperature are maintained. Abstract Future climate changes are predicted to

Evaluation of Yellow Mealworm (<i>Tenebrio molitor</i>) Larvae Meal as a Carbon Source in Biofloc System for Dwarf Crayfish (<i>Cambarellus montezumae</i>) Culture. [PDF]

open access: yesAquac Nutr
The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of Tenebrio molitor larvae meal as a carbon source in a biofloc system (BFT) to optimize the culture of C. montezumae. A trial was conducted for 24 weeks, 500 T. molitor larvae were reared with wheat bran as substrate, and hydration once a week; at the end, 9000 T.

Groundwater environmental DNA metabarcoding reveals hidden diversity and reflects land‐use and geology

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 13, Page 3497-3512, July 2023., 2023
Abstract Despite being the most important source of liquid freshwater on the planet, groundwater is severely threatened by climate change, agriculture, or industrial mining. It is thus extensively monitored for pollutants and declines in quantity. The organisms living in groundwater, however, are rarely the target of surveillance programmes and little ...

Fine structure of the retrocerebral organ in the rotifer Trichocerca similis (Monogononta)

open access: yesInvertebrate Biology, Volume 142, Issue 1, March 2023., 2023
Abstract The retrocerebral organ (RCO) is a complex glandular system that is widely distributed across species of phylum Rotifera (sensu stricto). This system is hypothesized to secrete mucus that aids in benthic locomotion, adhesion, and/or reproduction.

Reduced ageing in the frozen state in the tardigrade Milnesium inceptum (Eutardigrada: Apochela)

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 318, Issue 4, Page 253-259, December 2022., 2022
Tardigrades were subjected to subzero temperature treatment by cooling on agar plates from room temperature down to ‐30°C. The specimens were kept for seven days at ‐30°C without temperature fluctuations, after which the animals were allowed to slowly warm. Live and dead animals were recorded after thawing.

Food niches of planktonic rotifers: Diversification and implications

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 67, Issue 10, Page 2218-2251, October 2022., 2022
Abstract The diverse diets of common planktonic rotifers are described in detail from field and laboratory observations and experiments. Also considered are methodological approaches, rotifer feeding mechanisms, and the availability in natural waters of less well‐known food items (detritus, picoplankton, protozoans).

Genetic differentiation and phylogeography of rotifer Polyarthra dolichoptera and P. vulgaris populations between Southeastern China and eastern North America: High intercontinental differences

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 5, May 2022., 2022
Oceanographic barriers affect the phylogeographic pattern of rotifers in continental waters and maintaining genetic diversity in nature. The divergence indicates that gene flow between eastern North America and Southeastern China is limited while that within eastern North America or Southeastern China was higher.
