Processes of phonological change in developmental speech disorders
Clinical Linguistics and Phonetics, 1992Two analytical frameworks for identifying and measuring the processes of phonological change in the speech of children with developmental speech disorders are described. The frameworks are illustrated by an examination and evaluation of longitudinal data from children with this type of disorder.

Phonological disorders in children: Changes in phonological process use during treatment
International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders, 1989ABSTRACTUnintelligible speech in childhood is often characterised by the use of unusual or deviant (i.e. non‐developmental) phonological processes, e.g. initial consonant deletion. These processes are reported to appear at speech onset and to undergo little spontaneous change during the preschool years.

Dodd and Iacano [sic] (1989) report the effects of phonological treatment with seven phonologically disordered children, ages 3;0-4;9 years. The subjects' pre-treatment speech samples were analysed for application of 'developmental' and 'unusual' (deviant) phonological processes, and treatment targeted at unusual processes was administered to each ...

The ability of cerebral hemispheres to process language is influenced by multiple factors. The well-known right visual field advantage in word recognition in divided visual field tasks is affected by both intra- and inter-individual variables. For example, hemispheric linguistic abilities may vary within a given individual according to the language ...

Ingham and Saben's comments on our paper seem to highlight fundamental differences in the perceived value of qualitative research. We interpret their position to be that only quantitative research which empirically tests specific hypotheses has the potential to contribute significantly to knowledge.

Auditory phoneme discrimination is a basic and important prerequisite for acquiring speech, reading, and spelling skills. Children, who are unable to perceive auditory phoneme discrimination, cannot develop phonemic representations. Therefore, the early identification of these deficits and application of effective therapeutic approaches is a necessity.
