Essential lipid autacoids rewire mitochondrial energy efficiency in metabolic dysfunction‐associated fatty liver disease

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Increased liver content of DHA‐derived small lipid autacoids (i.e resolvin D1 and maresin 1) associates with enhanced mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid β‐oxidation and bioenergetic metabolic flux. These features provide hepatic protection from steatotic, pro‐inflammatory and fibrogenic insults.

Enzymic synthesis of ether types of choline and ethanolamine phosphoglycerides by microsomal fractions from rat brain and liver

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1977
The formation of product by ethanolamine phosphotransferases (EC 2.7.8.1) and cholinephosphotransferases (EC 2.7.8.2) in microsomal fractions from brains and livers of mature rats is increased several fold by 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycerols. With the addition of

Bacteria‐Responsive Nanostructured Drug Delivery Systems for Targeted Antimicrobial Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Bacteria‐responsive nanocarriers are designed to release antimicrobials only in the presence of infection‐specific cues. This selective activation ensures drug release precisely at the site of infection, avoiding premature or indiscriminate release, and enhancing efficacy.

Loss of hepatic SMLR1 causes hepatosteatosis and protects against atherosclerosis due to decreased hepatic VLDL secretion

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
The role of SMLR1 in lipid metabolism (high fat + cholesterol diet in mice) Abstract Background and Aims The assembly and secretion of VLDL from the liver, a pathway that affects hepatic and plasma lipids, remains incompletely understood. We set out to identify players in the VLDL biogenesis pathway by identifying genes that are co‐expressed with the ...

Interfacial properties of most monofluorinated bile acids deviate markedly from the natural congeners

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2005
We characterized the air-water interfacial properties of four monofluorinated bile acids alone and in binary mixtures with a common lecithin, 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC), using an automated Langmuir-Pockels surface balance. We

Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy in Bionanotechnology: Current Advances and Future Perspectives

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) enables the nanoscale mapping of electrostatic surface potentials. While widely applied in materials science, its use in biological systems remains emerging. This review presents recent advances in KPFM applied to biological samples and provides a critical perspective on current limitations and future directions for

Smooth muscle raft-like membranes

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2004
We developed a method for extracting raft-like, liquid-ordered membranes from the particulate fraction prepared from porcine trachealis smooth muscle.

Expansion of Phosphatidylcholine and Phosphatidylserine/Phosphatidylcholine Monolayers by Differently Charged Amphiphiles

open access: yesZeitschrift für Naturforschung C, 2001
Abstract Monolayer Technique, Nonionic Detergent, Erythrocyte Shape The degree and time-course of expansion of palmitoyloleoylphosphatidylcholine (PC) and bovine brain phosphatidylserine (PS)/PC (75:25, mol/mol) monolayers at 32 mN/m caused by differently charged amphiphiles (detergents) added to the sub-phase buffer (pH 7.4, 22 °C ...

Treatment with Plasma Activated (Salt) Water Sterilizes Macromolecular Coatings While Maintaining Their Integrity and Functionality

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
PDMS samples were covalently coated with mucin glycoproteins and then treated with either plasma activated water (PAW) or saline (PAS) as a means of disinfection. The samples could be successfully sterilized without compromising the structural integrity or functionality of those coatings.

Free energy barrier for melittin reorientation from a membrane-bound state to a transmembrane state [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
An important step in a phospholipid membrane pore formation by melittin antimicrobial peptide is a reorientation of the peptide from a surface into a transmembrane conformation.
