Stability of phosphatidylethanol 16:0/18:1 in authentic and spiked whole blood

open access: yesDrug Testing and Analysis, 2021
: Phosphatidylethanol 16:0/18:1 (PEth) is the most abundant homologue of the phosphatidylethanol group of phospholipids. Formed only in the presence of ethanol, PEth is used as a biomarker in whole blood to provide information about the consumption of ...

Transfer of Phosphatidylethanol Between Lipoproteins

Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 2004
Background: Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is an abnormal phospholipid formed only in the presence of ethanol. It has been recently shown that lipoprotein‐associated PEth may mediate the effects of ethanol on endothelial cells, and this may explain, at least in part, the beneficial effect of ethanol on atherosclerosis.

Phosphatidylethanol in Blood as a Marker of Chronic Alcohol Use: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2012
The present paper aims at a systematic review of the current knowledge on phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in blood as a direct marker of chronic alcohol use and abuse. In March 2012, the search through “MeSH” and “free-text” protocols in the databases Medline/

Method for Preparing Phosphatidylethanol

Chemistry of Natural Compounds, 2004
A method has been developed for preparing the unique phospholipid phosphatidylethanol, which is a marker of human and animal alcohol intoxication and acts as an effective component of liposomal forms of medicinal compounds. The method consists of preparation of the diethyl ester of phosphatidic acid with subsequent removal of one ethyl by CsF in t ...

Molecular Mechanics and Calorimetric Studies of Phosphatidylethanols

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 2001
Phosphatidylethanols (PEths) are negatively charged diacyl phospholipids that are ubiquitously present in humans under the condition of alcohol intoxication. These lipids, derived in vivo from other naturally occurring phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholines (PC) via transphosphatidylation reaction as catalyzed by phospholipase D in the presence of ...

Formation of phosphatidylethanol in rat brain by phospholipase D

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1987
The mechanism of phosphatidyl [14C]ethanol formation was studied in rat brain microsomal fraction. Phospholipase D and base-exchange enzymes were assayed with [14C]ethanol as substrate. Phospholipase D was found to catalyse the formation of phosphatidylethanol. The reaction was dependent on sodium-oleate as activating factor.

ALCOHOLISM AND BIOSYNTHESIS OF PHOSPHATIDYLETHANOL

Nutrition Reviews, 2009
The potential for synthesizing phosphatidylethanol is greater in lymphocytes of adult males with alcohol dependency and a family history of alcoholism than in control subjects. This distinctive characteristic may be a potential metabolic marker for the risk of alcoholism.
