Hypotensive Snake Venom Components—A Mini-Review

open access: yesMolecules, 2019
Hypertension is considered a major public health issue due to its high prevalence and subsequent risk of cardiovascular and kidney diseases. Thus, the search for new antihypertensive compounds remains of great interest.

Phospholipases in neuronal function: A role in learning and memory?

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, 2019
Despite the human brain being made of nearly 60% fat, the vast majority of studies on the mechanisms of neuronal communication which underpin cognition, memory and learning, primarily focus on proteins and/or (epi)genetic mechanisms.

Endogenous “Time Bomb” – Mislocalized Phospholipase A2 as a Critical Mediator of Ultra‐Rapid Mortality in Sepsis and Acute Lung Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Phospholipase A2 (PLA2), a dormant enzyme, becomes lethal when activated—collapsing lungs in minutes. Our dual therapy (DOPS + varespladib) boosts survival from 0% to >90% in sepsis/ALI. A breakthrough for acute lung injury treatment. ABSTRACT This study reveals that phospholipase A2 (PLA2), normally stable and nontoxic, can be activated specifically ...

Bacterial phospholipase A

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta - Molecular and Cell Biology of Lipids, 2000
Within the large family of lipolytic enzymes, phospholipases constitute a very diverse subgroup with physiological functions such as digestion and signal transduction. Most phospholipases may associate with membranes at the lipid-water interface. However, in many Gram-negative bacteria, a phospholipase is present which is located integrally in the ...

Pharmacometabolomic mapping of early biochemical changes induced by sertraline and placebo. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this study, we characterized early biochemical changes associated with sertraline and placebo administration and changes associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).

Delivery of Pleckstrin‐Homology Domains Suppresses PI3K/Akt Signaling and Breast Cancer Metastasis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Current therapies curb tumor growth but not metastasis. Obscurin, a giant metastasis suppressor lost in breast cancer, restrains PI3K/Akt signaling but is impractical to restore. We deploy a mini‐obscurin, comprising the obscurin‐PH‐domain, which sequesters PI3K‐p85, potently suppressing invasion and metastasis.

Quantification and Localisation of New Brain Lipid Synthesis Using Deuterium Oxide and High Resolution Mass Spectrometry

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and mass spectrometry imaging were used in combination with deuterium oxide administration to quantify and localise newly synthesised myelin lipids in the mouse brain. This methodology, used here to show sites of myelin repair, enables the measurement of dynamic lipid synthesis in living systems and ...

PVNCRF Neurons Regulate Migraine‐Like Allodynia by Activating CRFR2 on Spinal Trigeminal Caudalis Glutamatergic Neurons

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Paraventricular CRF neurons in the hypothalamus project to glutamatergic neurons of the spinal trigeminal caudal nucleus, enhancing neuronal activation and CRFR2 signaling. This pathway increases CRF release and excitatory drive, promoting central sensitization and migraine‐related behaviors. Targeting the PVN–SP5C circuit provides a potential strategy
