A novel electron microscopy specimen protocol shows that the presumed phospholipid bilayer membrane ribbons that wind helically to form the cylinders known as "tubules" are actually flattened tubes. These flattened tubes are alternatively found with a helical twist about the tube's long axis or occasionally flat with no winding or twist.

Hyaluronan–Phospholipid Interactions
Journal of Structural Biology, 1997Hyaluronan-phospholipid interactions have been studied in vitro by negative staining and rotary shadowing electron microscopy. Hyaluronan (HA) molecules of different molecular weights (around 170,000; 740,000, and 1.9 x 10(6) Da) were added to phospholipid suspensions (DPPC or egg lecithin) that were in the form of either unilamellar particles or ...

Phospholipid nanosomes are small, uniform liposomes manufactured utilizing supercritical fluid technologies. Supercritical fluids are first used to solvate phospholipid raw materials, and then decompressed to form phospholipid nanosomes that can encapsulate hydrophilic molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids.

Eukaryotic Phospholipid Biosynthesis
Annual Review of Biochemistry, 1995The current status of the biochemistry of phospholipid biosynthesis is presented. The review focuses on the identification and characterization of molecular tools such as purified enzymes and cloned genes and cDNAs for those enzymes. The enzymes discussed are those involved in the biosynthesis of the major phospholipid classes, namely, phosphatidate ...

Assembly of the phospholipid bilayer of cellular membranes is a fundamental aspect of cell growth and proliferation. Phospholipids are concomitantly synthesized and inserted at the cytoplasmic surface of the endoplasmic reticulum. Following this asymmetric assembly, transmembrane movement to the lumenal leaflet of the endoplasmic reticulum must occur ...
