Quantifying retinal oxygenation and metabolism by phosphorescence lifetime imaging

Experimental Eye Research
The retina is a highly metabolically active tissue, requiring adequate availability of oxygen and other metabolites to generate energy for cellular survival and visual function. Retinal hypoxia has been implicated in several common retinal diseases and associated with the development of vision-threatening pathologies.

Quantitative, Depth-Resolved Imaging of Oxygen Concentration by Phosphorescence Lifetime Measurement

Applied Spectroscopy, 1993
Minimally invasive determination of oxygen concentration can be made by measuring phosphorescence lifetime. We describe a technique for depth-resolved measurements of oxygen concentration using confocal imaging of phosphorescence lifetime. A confocal imaging system is used to obtain depth-resolved measurements of phosphorescence decay.

Retinal oxygen tension estimation in phosphorescence lifetime images using regularized least squares

2008 IEEE International Conference on Electro/Information Technology, 2008
The role of inadequate retinal oxygenation in the development of retinal diseases is an important problem for investigation. In our study, quantitative measurement of oxygen tension in retinal vasculatures is made with the noninvasive technique of phosphorescence lifetime imaging.

Two-photon phosphorescence lifetime microscopy (2PLM) for high resolution imaging of oxygen

SPIE Proceedings, 2011
We present a new method for imaging of oxygen in biological samples with micron-scale resolution and threedimensional capability. Our technique combines phosphorescence quenching with multiphoton laser scanning microscopy. It is termed two-photon phosphorescence lifetime microscopy (2PLM).

Simultaneous Phosphorescence and Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging by Multi-Dimensional TCSPC and Multi-Pulse Excitation

2017
TCSPC FLIM/PLIM is based on a multi-dimensional time-correlated single-photon counting process. The sample is scanned by a high-frequency-pulsed laser beam which is additionally modulated on/off synchronously with the pixels of the scan. FLIM is obtained by building up the distribution of the photons over the scanning coordinates and the times of the ...

Continuous Glucose Monitoring using a Wearable Phosphorescence Lifetime Imager and Machine Learning

CLEO 2025
We present a misalignment-resilient continuous glucose monitoring system leveraging an insertable sensor and a wearable phosphorescence lifetime imager. In vitro testing revealed 88.8% accuracy in classifying glucose levels as normal, low, and high concentration ranges.
