Photoprotection by clothing

Dermatologic Therapy, 2003
Wearing of clothing, hats, and sunglasses to protect from exposure to sunlight should be part of a package of protection. Clothing specifically designed to avoid exposure is now available and recently standards have been published in several countries to measure the degree of protection.

Systemic Photoprotection

Dermatologic Clinics, 1986
At present, three classes of compounds are used as systemic photoprotective agents, but only for specific indications, not for general use in healthy individuals. Beta-carotene prevents or lessens photosensitivity in most patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria and in some patients with other photosensitivity diseases.

Photoprotection by carotenoids

Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 1988
Carotenoid pigments have been found to have a protective function against photosensitization in green plants. This protective ability has been exploited in the administration of high doses of beta-carotene to patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria to ameliorate the photosensitivity associated with this disease.

Photoprotection in the Era of Nanotechnology

Seminars in Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, 2011
Commercial sunscreen based on nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) and zinc oxide (ZnO) delivers superior UV protection and reduces whitening on skin compared to the older generations of inorganic sunscreens. This review discusses the historical use of nano-sized TiO(2) and ZnO in sunscreen and the relationship between UV attenuation and the primary ...

Current concepts. Photoprotection

Archives of Family Medicine, 1996
Photoprotection encompasses all methods to prevent UV radiation (UVR) damage to the skin, including sunscreens, clothing, seeking shade, and duration and time of the day spent outdoors under UVR. As scientific research validates short- and long-term detrimental effects of UVR, physicians and the public must become increasingly aware of these problems ...

Sunscreens and Hair Photoprotection

Dermatologic Clinics, 2006
Photoprotection as it pertains to hair is not a common topic addressed by the dermatologist. Hair is nonliving and requires no protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation because carcinogenesis of the hair shaft itself is not possible. If hair proteins are altered by sun exposure, damaged hair can be removed and replaced by new growth.
