Imprints of land use history and disturbance regime in phylogenetic diversity of Mediterranean plant communities

open access: yesEcosphere
Mediterranean landscapes were drastically affected by high levels of abandonment of agricultural and other land practices during the last century. These changes in land use can have significant effects on diversity patterns by altering disturbance and ...

Asynchronous patterns in soil bacterial diversity and functional potentials along an alpine altitudinal gradient

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
IntroductionAltitudinal changes in soil bacterial diversity, composition, biotic interactions, and function are prevalent. However, the overall patterns and associations among these dimensions remain unclear, particularly in vulnerable alpine mountain ...

Bioenergy Cropping Reduces the Spatiotemporal Scaling of Soil Bacterial Biodiversity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Consistent with patterns observed in plant and animal communities, soil bacterial communities exhibit significant species–time–area and phylogenetic–time–area relationships independent of nested structure. Bioenergy cropping significantly reduces the spatiotemporal scaling rates, particularly in sandy loam soils.

Student News [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Calyptrates are a megadiverse, actively radiating, group of dipterans, which are widely spread and abundant in nearly all terrestrial environments. Despite huge diversity and economic importance, their phylogeny is far from resolved.

Targeted Mitochondrial ECSIT Overexpression Attenuates MASH by Increasing OTUD3 Expression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial ECSIT expression is reduced during MASH pathogenesis. Overexpression of mitochondrial ECSIT mitigates steatohepatitis and maintains hepatic metabolic homeostasis. Mechanistically, ECSIT enhances intramitochondrial OTUD3 expression to stabilize SIRT3 through deubiquitination, thus preserving mitochondrial function and impeding disease ...

Proton FLASH Exposure Preserves Gut Commensal Microbiomes and Spares Intestinal Stem Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study highlights the role of Proton FLASH abdominal irradiation in sparing of intestinal stem cells and preservation of key gut microbial population resulting minimization of radiation toxicity in intestinal epithelium in mice. Our findings support the potential of Proton FLASH to improve the therapeutic ratio for abdominal radiation exposure ...
