CD4+ T cell activation and associated susceptibility to HIV‐1 infection in vitro increased following acute resistance exercise in human subjects

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2019
Early studies in exercise immunology suggested acute bouts of exercise had an immunosuppressive effect in human subjects. However, recent data, show acute bouts of combined aerobic and resistance training increase both lymphocyte activation and ...

The impact of leukocyte‐associated RNA retention on platelet RNA‐based cancer detection

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Platelets carry RNA signals that may help detect cancer, but platelet samples can also retain RNA from white blood cells. We found that this retained white blood cell signal did not significantly affect machine learning cancer classification, suggesting that the cancer‐related RNA signal in platelets is largely independent of leukocyte‐associated RNA ...

Amp-activated protein kinase (Ampk) in skeletal muscle during physical exercise

open access: yes, 2020
AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a phylogenetically conserved serine-threonine protein kinase that plays a major role as fuel-sensing enzyme. As such it stimulates the fatty acid oxidation, glucose uptake and ketogenesis with a concomitant ...

An outer membrane vesicle‐associated two‐track model for enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis oncogenesis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis is a gut bacterium linked to bowel cancer. We propose that its toxin acts along two routes: at the cell surface, cutting the adhesion protein E‐cadherin and triggering inflammation; and inside the cell, delivered by bacterial vesicles, switching on NOD1 and cancer stem cell programs.

Programming evolution of geometry in shape-morphing sheets via spatio-temporal activation [PDF]

open access: yes
Shape-programmed sheets morph from one surface into another upon activation by stimuli such as illumination, and have attracted much interest for their potential engineering applications, especially in soft robotics. Complex shape changes can be achieved

Physical activity and obesity

open access: yesBiomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, 1994
Obesity is a major public health problem. Secular increases in the prevalence of obesity appear to be paralleled by decreases in physical activity. Although physical activity and weight are associated, the exact nature of the relationship remains uncertain.

Raman‐based label‐free microscopic analysis of the pancreas in living zebrafish larvae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Forward stimulated Raman scattering (F‐SRS) and epi coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (E‐CARS) allow label‐free discrimination of distinct subcellular structures in the pancreas of living zebrafish larvae. Given the straightforward applicability, we anticipate broad implementation of Raman microscopy in other organs and across various biomedical ...
