Human gene for physical performance

open access: yesNature, 1998
A specific genetic factor that strongly influences human physical performance has not so far been reported, but here we show that a polymorphism in the gene encoding angiotensin-converting enzyme does just that. An ‘insertion’ allele of the gene is associated with elite endurance performance among high-altitude mountaineers.

Understanding bio‐based polymers: A study of origins, properties, biodegradation and their impact on health and the environment

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review provides an overview of bio‐based polymer sources, their unique functional properties and their environmental impact, and addresses their role as sustainable alternatives. It discusses end‐of‐life options, including composting and anaerobic digestion for renewable energy.

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Muscle Architecture of Gastrocnemius Medialis and Rate of Force Development during Different Stretching Protocols

open access: yesProceedings, 2019
AIM: Rate of force development (RFD) of the leg extensor muscles is important for jumping performance. Static stretching has been shown to reduce explosive force generation, but little is known regarding changes in muscle architectural characteristics ...

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Effects of 12 Weeks of Combined Exercise on Heart Rate Variability and Dynamic Pulmonary Function in Obese and Elderly Korean Women

open access: yesIranian Journal of Public Health, 2018
Background: We investigated whether a combination of aerobic and resistance exercise administered over a period of 12 weeks enhanced heart rate variability (HRV) and dynamic pulmonary function (DPF) in obese and elderly Korean women. Methods: The study

Oral Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplements That Reduce Brain Serotonin During Exercise in Rats Also Lower Brain Catecholamines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Exercise raises brain serotonin release and is postulated to cause fatigue in athletes; ingestion of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), by competitively inhibiting tryptophan transport into brain, lowers brain tryptophan uptake and serotonin synthesis ...

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

The Impact of Operators' Performance in the Reliability of Cyber-Physical Power Distribution Systems

open access: yes, 2016
Cyber-Physical Systems are the result of integrating information and communication technologies into physical systems. One particular case are Cyber-Physical Power Systems (CPPS), which use communication technologies to perform real-time monitoring and ...
