Scientific Opinion on the safety of stigmasterol‐rich plant sterols as food additive

open access: yesEFSA Journal, 2012
The Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources added to Food (ANS) delivers a scientific opinion evaluating the safety of use of stigmasterol‐rich plant sterols in ready‐to‐freeze alcoholic cocktails as a stabiliser.

Phytosterols and fatty acids, but not phytosterol esters, affect cholesterol micellarization in vitro

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2010
The mechanisms by which consumption of phytosterols and their fatty acyl esters decreases LDL cholesterol, an atherosclerotic risk factor, are incompletely characterized. To test the hypothesis that phytosterols, phytosterol esters, and simulated hydrolysis products of the esters differentially affect ...

Skin Improvement Effects of Phytosterol Ester Derived from Rice Bran

open access: yesJournal of Food Science and Nutrition Research, 2022
Rice bran contains an abundance of phytosterols. We have developed “Riceterol EsterTM” (RSE), which consists of a phytosterol ester and fatty acids made from the by-product of extracting oil from rice bran. RSE has been registered as a cosmetic ingredient in rice bran-derived products, and its physical functions, such as its high water retention and ...

Lipídios modificados obtidos a partir de gordura do leite, óleo de girassol e ésteres de fitosteróis para aplicação em spreads Modified lipids obtained from milk fat, sunflower oil, and phytosterol esters for application in tablespreads

open access: yesQuímica Nova, 2008
The objective of this paper was to evaluate the modifications in milkfat properties with the addition of sunflower oil (SO) and phytosterol esters (PE) and chemical interesterification.

Encapsulation of phytosterols and phytosterol esters in liposomes made with soy phospholipids by high pressure homogenization

open access: yesPlanta Medica International Open, 2018
Phytosterols and phytosterol esters were encapsulated within large unilamellar liposomes prepared with soy phospholipids using a microfluidizer. The average particle diameter of these liposomal vesicles increased with increasing amounts of encapsulated phytosterols, especially with increasing free sterol content.

POLYMETHOXYLATED FLAVONES FROM SOLANUM ABUTILOIDES, GROWN IN EGYPT (SOLANACEAE)

open access: yesZagazig Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2006
Two polymethoxyflavones,5-O-demethylnobiletin and 7,4'-dihydroxy-5,6,8,3'-tetramethoxyflavones were isolated from the chloroform extracts of fresh yellow-orange berries of Solanum abutiloides.

Optimization of Saponification Process for Quantification of Individual and Total Tocopherols and Phytosterols in Canola Oil Refining By‐Products

open access: yesJournal of the American Oil Chemists' Society, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this study, saponification variables were optimized using a face‐centred central composite design‐response surface methodology. The variables included reaction temperature (50°C–120°C), reaction time (30–180 min), KOH concentration (0.5–3 M) and pyrogallol concentration (0–1% w/v).

Characterization of Cantaloupe, Grape, Pumpkin, and Tomato Seed Oils From Xinjiang: Oxidative Stability, Volatile‐Compound Analysis, and Sensory Evaluation

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
This study compares oxidative stability, fatty acid profiles, volatile compounds, and sensory attributes of four Xinjiang seed oils. Distinct aldehyde‐driven aroma patterns and compositional differences were revealed, providing a scientific basis for quality evaluation and valorization of underutilized plant seed oils in food applications.

Biosynthesis of Phytosterol Esters: Identification of a Sterol O-Acyltransferase in Arabidopsis [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Physiology, 2007
Fatty acyl esters of phytosterols are a major form of sterol conjugates distributed in many parts of plants. In this study we report an Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) gene, AtSAT1 (At3g51970), which encodes for a novel sterol O-acyltransferase. When expressed in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), AtSAT1 mediated production of sterol esters enriched ...

Rapid quantification of free and esterified phytosterols in human serum using APPI-LC-MS/MS

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2005
A novel analytical platform based on liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry using atmospheric pressure photoionization was applied for the simultaneous quantification of free and esterified β-sitosterol, campesterol, brassicasterol, and ...
