Two instances of large genome profile picobirnavirus occurrence in Argentinian infants with diarrhea over a 26-year period (1977–2002) [PDF]
Background: Picobirnavirus’ (PBV) association with diarrhea in children is not reliably established and the potential role of pathogenic PBV needs further investigations.

Evidence of closely related picobirnavirus strains circulating in humans and pigs in Argentina
Journal of Infection, 2011On the basis of the published literature, it is still difficult to draw conclusions as to whether picobirnavirus (PBV) circulation is influenced by host species restriction. To provide data regarding the genetic relatedness between porcine and human PBV strains present in Argentina as a means of defining the host range and epidemiology of these viruses ...

Molecular Detection and Characterization of Picobirnavirus in Environmental Water in Thailand
Clinical Laboratory, 2020Enteric viruses are responsible for waterborne and foodborne infections affecting a large number of people around the world. Picobirnavirus (PBV) is a highly versatile virus, detected in a wide range of hosts and has been reported to be associated with gastroenteritis in humans and animals.Molecular screening of environmental water samples for PBV was ...

Detection of Picobirnavirus in HIV-Infected Patients With Diarrhea in Argentina
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, 1998Diarrhea due to enteric pathogens is an important complication of advanced HIV infection. Picobirnaviruses are agents recently linked with human enteritis. In total, 197 fecal samples collected from HIV-infected and noninfected patients with and without diarrhea were investigated for the presence of rotavirus and picobirnavirus by polyacrylamide gel ...

The 2362 base pair sequence of the larger of the two double stranded RNA genome segments of a rabbit strain of picobirnavirus (PBV) has a major open reading frame (ORF) of 591 amino acids and two smaller ORFs of 55 and 155 amino acids. A clone of the segment did not hybridise with other viral bisegmented ds RNAs from faecal samples.

Maintenance of picobirnavirus (PBV) infection in an adult orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and genetic diversity of excreted viral strains during a three-year period [PDF]
The present work provide data about the maintenance of picobirnavirus (PBV) infection during adulthood in a mammalian host. For this purpose PBV infection was studied in an adult orangutan (.

Molecular and Phylogenetic Analysis of a Novel Turkey-Origin Picobirnavirus
Avian Diseases, 2014A previous metagenomic analysis of the turkey gut RNA virus community identified novel enteric viruses that may play roles in poultry enteric diseases or in performance problems noted in the field. As part of the molecular characterization of these novel enteric viruses, a reverse transcriptase-PCR diagnostic assay was developed, targeting a novel ...

Novel bisegmented virus (picobirnavirus) of animals, birds and humans
Picobirnaviruses (PBVs) are novel group of small, nonenveloped, bisegmented and double stranded RNA viruses. PBVs have been identified in the faeces of a broad range of hosts by several international research groups. Since attempts to culture PBV in vitro have not been made to date and no animal model of infection and disease exists.

Detection of a picobirnavirus associated withCryptosporidium positive stools from humans
Archives of Virology, 1995A picobirnavirus with an atypical genome profile was detected by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) in 37% (20/54) of human faecal samples also containing oocysts of Cryptosporidium typical of C. parvum. This virus shares many of the characteristics of the previously described picobirnaviruses, but has a significantly smaller genome (1.75 and 1 ...

The Picobirnavirus: an Integrated View on its Biology, Epidemiology and Pathogenic Potential
Future Virology, 2011Picobirnaviruses (PBV) are a group of small, nonenveloped viruses with bi-segmented dsRNA genomes. The large genomic segment encodes for the capsid protein while the small segment encodes for the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. PBV are widely distributed and have been detected in the feces of a large variety of vertebrate species, including farm and ...
